I agree with you 100% on tensioning creating the abnormality in production, that is where I would go to in production, because of how they design their drivers around a thin diaphragm which should be caught in testing.

Nice comparison! I believe those modules have to settle in before making a final judgement. I also raised mine on spikes to assist in cooling.
