Need a solution for small apartment, computer-based sound system

I can buy it locally with a good return policy - I think I will just give it a shot and see how it sounds... since no one seems to have any better solution.

No? Their website says, and I quote, "the output of the W3 works great with headphones".

Need a solution for small apartment, computer-based sound system

70 views and no opinions! OK, then I'll give you a chance to tell me I'm wrong (we know how much audiophiles love that ;-) ). I think I'm going to go with the Audioengine W3 and A5+ pairing. Since the W3 has a mini jack input/output this means in addition to using it with the speakers, I can...

Need a solution for small apartment, computer-based sound system

So... I just moved to Manhattan and in the process I got rid of most of my stuff because my new place is (of course) tiny. It's basically just two rooms, a bedroom and a livingroom (with a kitchen niche in one corner). I got rid of my big speakers, the receiver, CD, TV, DVD, etc. etc. and just...

PONO - Neil Youngs portable hi-res music player

At 5" x 2" x 1" with awkward triangular corners, it may not fit in your pocket at all. Problem solved!

    Headphone Sightings 2

They are even worse in person when you can see the tangled mess of the French's-mustard-yellow cable, and how cheap the plastic looks... *shudder*  I think they must be the ugliest headphones I've seen IRL.

    Headphone Sightings 2

My co-worker came in with a pair of these...   http://www.amazon.com/EarPollution-DJ-Style-Headphones-Billionaire-EP-DJ-BILLION/dp/B001SEARCS   The picture there doesn't really do justice to the bright yellow cable.   I might have to put on my MS-1s and close my office door to avoid...

    Jazz Recommendations from this Century

I was pretty disappointed with that Zorn collaboration (I'm coming at it from Zorn fandom, not Metheny fandom). The Book of Angels is some of my favorite music by anyone anywhere, and this was one of the weakest volumes for me. Out of 20 volumes it's the only one where I didn't bother putting...

    Jazz Recommendations from this Century

I guess I shouldn't really complain about Boston - like you say, it's got a better scene than most places. It's just that the jazz we have here isn't so much to my taste and the clubs aren't either. The bigger jazz venues here are catering towards baby boomers (and older folks) who want a...

    Jazz Recommendations from this Century

Honestly, I'm not that excited about the local jazz scene... we get some good musicians/bands but a lot of the local jazz clubs are awful. I go to NYC when I can piece together enough shows to make paying for a hotel room worthwhile. I spent 13 nights there since Christmas and saw a total of...

    Jazz Recommendations from this Century

There's been an absolute embarrassment of riches in terms of live jazz lately, for me anyway.... (I have to assume any jazz you can see live is "contemporary" by definition, right?)   Standouts include: John Medeski on solo piano The Bad Plus on NYE at the Village Vanguard Marc Ribot Trio...

What Live concerts have you attended?

Probably a couple hundred times. In fact, twice in the last two months I was not only there without friends, but I was the only audience member who showed up at the concert. Now THAT is awkward! (I write concert reviews for two different websites - my blog and a punk/DIY sort of online 'zine...

What Live concerts have you attended?

I've been on a really outrageous concert tear lately. I've been saving money (and co-worker/boss goodwill) for a couple of years in anticipation of John Zorn's 60th birthday concerts... I'd already been to a couple of events earlier this year, but September 2013 was The Big One for us Zorn fans...

GRADO GR10: Reviews, First Impressions Thread

The GR10s are quite hissy with a noisy/poor-quality source. Laptops don't tend to have very clean-sounding headphone jacks. Mine is the same way, sounds great from any portable player but really noisy from my laptop. You could always get a different source for your laptop - an add-on sound-card...

What Live concerts have you attended?

Since my last post in this thread on November 18 2012... and not including half a dozen jazz improv sets with too many musicians to bother listing... I have seen:   A Far Cry (Haydn, Cage, Schnittke) Alloy Orchestra (From Morn to Midnight) Amanda Palmer Baby Soda Jazz Band Brian...

Most bizarre album of you've heard? [any genre]

Quote:   He has done performances and recordings using actual duck calls. They are little wooden whistle-type things that, when used correctly, make a sound like a duck. Hunters use them to lure ducks or something. You can imagine what someone who makes a saxophone sound like a goose...

Most bizarre album of you've heard? [any genre]

Quote:   Agreed. I've seen him over 40 times with a bunch of different ensembles, and not a single one was a bad concert. He really knows how to bring out something special in the people he works with.   I was actually just talking on another music forum with a friend of mine who just...

Most bizarre album of you've heard? [any genre]

Quote:   I love him too. I've given up on trying to be a completist... he seems to be accelerating his output and I just can't keep up, let alone keep digging into his back catalog. I have about 80 of his albums. The funny thing about him is that you can be a huge Zorn fan and have 80 of...

Most bizarre album of you've heard? [any genre]

Richard Foreman's theater production of Zorn's "Astronome" was pretty out there. (The NY Times reviewed it: http://theater.nytimes.com/2009/02/14/theater/reviews/14bran.html?_r=0 )  You can buy it on DVD if you like that sort of thing. I'm a big fan of Zorn but it was a bit much for me...

    Tzadik label

Quote: I said that mainly for any thread passersby, so they'd know I wasn't recommending all jazz albums if they wanted to dip their toe in...   Xaphan is really a cool album, lots of energy and pretty wild. I've seen them perform it a couple of times, just amazing. Some Middle Eastern...

    Tzadik label

I have a ton of Tzadik stuff. (And a lot of it is really nice-sounding!)  I haven't heard Radar, and they are proving difficult to google... radar, no. Radar band, no. Radar music band, amazingly still no... LOL. File under "what not to name your band," I guess! (I did find it eventually...

No longer receiving any site e-mails?

A while back I just stopped receiving all e-mail notifications from the site. I didn't change anything... it just stopped. They're not in my junk folder or anything like that. Is there some way I can fix this?  I keep forgetting to come to the site to check the forums because I'm so used to...

The IEM/Portable Headphones Deal Alerts Thread - Closed! Use the Deals Thread III instead.

Good to hear. These are going to be my commuting phones, not "top tier" listening... but I'll take great sound where I can get it. And comfort is a big bonus. The Westones are really not very compatible with my ears... but the UE700s look very similar to my beloved GR10s, fitwise.
