@Leonne I personally don't think the mids are too thick or muddy. In fact, I think they have a nice weight to them actually.- chowmein83

@NickT23 Yes, I did try it with my Sony Xperia I Mk2. It was decent, but the FH7S definitely benefits from being plugged into a better source.- chowmein83

ZMF Verite Open
Ok, so after having been able to listen to the Verite on the Cavalli/Monotprice Liquid Platinum, I felt that I had to somewhat rewrite my earlier impressions about the Verite, which are linked here and here. The sections that I changed a bit were Overall Sound Signature (in the 1st post)...- chowmein83

Monoprice Monolith Liquid Platinum - By Alex Cavalli
Thanks for the reply Alex! Now I know to just focus on the 6DJ8 family, and not be tempted by these other things which can be quite a bit cheaper. :beyersmile:- chowmein83

Monoprice Monolith Liquid Platinum - By Alex Cavalli
@runeight I have a question that I couldn't find an answer to yet after searching everywhere. Are there variants (or "close enough" substitutes) of the 6DJ8/6922/7308 tubes that can be used with the Liquid Platinum? Specifically, I'm wondering about 7DJ8/PCC88 tubes. Based on my research it...- chowmein83

ZMF Verite Open
As MonsterZero said above, yes they are most definitely in a different league. Verite is really just that much better. For the headphone noob question, I would think they would prefer the Aeolus more, because it's closer to a more "exciting" sound signature. Plus, my brother who is a relative...- chowmein83

ZMF Verite Open
I do want to mention, that when I said that the Verite is "dark" I mean that it doesn't emphasize the treble nearly as much as other headphones do, including the Auteur, at least in my experience. However, that doesn't mean that the Verite is lacking detail - it is not, and in fact I firmly...- chowmein83

Comment by 'chowmein83' in item 'FiiO M3K'
Maybe you could take a look at the Fiio M7? It has a claimed 20 hours of battery life (not quite hitting 24 hours but close) and has FM radio too. The only thing is that it isn't a clip on player, though the M7 isn't that much bigger than the M3K, just being somewhat taller.- chowmein83

Review by 'chowmein83' on item 'FiiO M3K'
So I'm going to try out a new review format - something that is much shorter than my earlier reviews and hopefully easier to read. Hope this gives people a better idea of what to expect from the M3K! Just to be clear – I was given a M3K review unit to check out (not keep) in exchange for a...- chowmein83

FiiO Q5, Flagship DAC/Amp, an Dual DAC, USB/Optical/Coaxial/Line in, share the same amp module with X7.
Hi all, I’ve had the wonderful opportunity to listen to a prototype Q5 that Fiio lent me for quite a while now. Since they’ve now announced a release date, Fiio felt that it was ok for me to share my impressions. Please excuse me if the rest of my impressions just sound like rambling and...- chowmein83

@bluedolphin Yes, that is the building where the offices are. FiiO takes up the entirety of one of the upper floors. The factory is located elsewhere in the city. -
Win a SUSVARA
I would like a chance to win the Susvara. Though I know I was one that didn't give such a positive review from an earlier listening session, I will admit that it was in somewhat noisy conditions and I may not have given it a fair chance. I would be happy to be proven wrong. The HE1000 V2 that...- chowmein83

Hifiman he-400i Impressions and Discussion
Welcome to Head-fi! As for whether you're missing anything with your mod, not really, unless you want to use something else to act as a grill and/or put some kind of free-flowing material to act as a dust filter (I believe somebody mentioned organza, like @DavidA)? As for your setup, I think...- chowmein83

FiiO X7 | DXD | DSD | 384K/64B | ESS9018+ Android | WiFi | Bluetooth | 4 AMP modules | Balanced Out |
I know that you’ve already made your decision, but I just wanted to chime in and say that the X5 3rd gen isn’t really all that worse than the X7. The only major thing that I might think of the X5 3rd gen faltering at compared to the X7 is driving extremely demanding headphones, and even...- chowmein83

FiiO X5 2nd gen Impressions and Discussion thread
Personally, I think that the X5 3rd gen is somewhere in the middle between the X5 2nd gen and the X7, somewhat leaning closer to the X7. But the X7 to me (at least with AM3 and AM5) is still better, especially if you use full-sized headphones and/or headphones that are revealing of your gear.- chowmein83

Fiio X5 3rd gen || 2x AKM 4490 || Balanced Out || DSD || DXD | DTS | Android || Dual Card Slot
Quote: I was going to wait for the official FiiO account to chime in, but I don't think they've given a very satisfactory answer. So I'll offer a possible explanation (this is after having talked with the guys at Echobox, who also use a Rockchip SOC in their Explorer DAP): Simply...- chowmein83

Hifiman he-400i Impressions and Discussion
Like others have said in this thread, I think the 400i sounds great in balanced mode. I use it this way regularly with the Cavalli Liquid Carbon, and I did use it with a Jotunheim when I owned that amp briefly. I actually think there's a rather noticeable difference when using the 400i in...- chowmein83

Fiio X5 3rd gen || 2x AKM 4490 || Balanced Out || DSD || DXD | DTS | Android || Dual Card Slot
Hey there dsrk, I have the 400i and I own an X7, and am currently borrowing an X5 3rd gen from FiiO. I can say that both the X5 3rd gen and the X7 sound very similar on the 400i - I still think the X7 still has a slight edge, but the difference isn't very big. Also, the X5 3rd gen sounds very...- chowmein83

Fiio X5 3rd gen || 2x AKM 4490 || Balanced Out || DSD || DXD | DTS | Android || Dual Card Slot
In terms of power, the SE and balanced out are very, very similar if you look at the specs on FiiO's website. In my testing, I found this to be the case - at the same volume number, both the SE and balanced out pretty much had the same sound level output as measured by my SPL meter. ...- chowmein83
