cpu's almost always use way more energy then mass storage device. So i think saving cpu cycles will have a much bigger effect on saving energy. Especially with solid state memory

really now, how would you describe the bass quantity, quality, accuracy, balance?  Would you rate the midrange forward, recessed, just right?  How is the high end as far as extension, presence of sibilance, neutral response fatiguing at all?

I think the portables stand up very well to a desktop amp for any headphones that are low to mid power required. Desktop amp shine for the HP's that are monsters to drive.

I haven't got to hear the j3 but I have heard the s9 which is basically the same exact sq has the j3. Ipod + lod + pico slim gives a more balanced sound with a larger sound stage. There is more separation between all the instruments which makes stuff seem clearer. The unamped s9 isn't a slouch...
