Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up

Need a 6by5ga tube rectifier recommendation for the linestage. I have a Philco, Tung-Sol, and Bendix (6x5). Ordered a RCA that is marked 6by5ga on the plain white box. The tube markings have worn off. Is there a way to tell if a tube really is a 6by5? Tube came from AES.l Thanks, barondla

Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up

A question for the tube experts. Ordered Linlai E 6sn7 for my preamp. The tubes are so fat they won't plug in without clanking into each other. I fixed this by using two stacked socket savers for two of the tubes. This works, but makes the preamp crazy tall. Does anyone make an "offset adapter"...

Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up

You nailed it. That was the linestage I was talking about. It finally blew up and I replaced it with a Sonic Euphoria PLC transformer passive linestage. Nothing to go bad. Still works flawlessly, but I've moved to a tube linestage. Thanks, barondla

Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up

In a design that doesn't push tubes to the max, life can last many years. I used to think tubes were horrible because of a preamp that used 6DJ8 and the spectacularly explosive Dynaco mk 6 monoblocks. The preamp burned through tubes in a year. The amps were probably the worse design Dyna ever...

Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up

According to JGH of Stereophile "one of the least sensitive speaker systems we've ever encountered. It does, however, seem capable of taking astonishing amounts of input power without audible stress, so if the power amplifier can deliver enough low-end belt, the speaker can be equalized to...

Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up

I use the Loki between the Pono Player and Koss/Massdrop ESP 95 electrostatic headphones. On line measurements made it easy to dial in the proper correction. Wouldn't be without it.

Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up

Been waiting for a month or more for Freya + to go off backorder. One day after the deadline it has been bumped up another month. Anyone know if so many new orders caused it to rapidly go back to backorder status, or if it never left? Glad I bought a backordered camera tripod when two became...

Koss E90 (driver unit in the ESP950 ESP95x package) modifications

Informative listening tests. Appreciate the work you've put into this. Everyone talks about using an analog power supply with the Koss. Is the Xbox brick an analog or switching power supply? Thanks.

PONO - Neil Youngs portable hi-res music player

Sounds like the Pono needs a new battery. Why not replace it and keep enjoying the Pono Player? Thanks, barondla

They do improve as they break in. They gain ease and decay of notes. Don't know if the diaphrams have to stretch, the electronics have to seat in, or both. Even after that I have to agree they aren't the most emotional sounding phones. I found EQ was needed to get the emotion. Someone measured...

The Koss energizer is much more susceptible to hum than a mere headphone amp. It is like comparing a moving magnet phono stage to a moving coil head amp. The Koss might be amplifing considerably more than a normal headphone amp. I hear a very very slight hum when using the PonoPlayer plugged...

This is really cool, thanks for posting. With all the Koss being sold, it would be nice if the amp had a Koss connector. It would save the cost of buying an adapter plus all the extra connections would be eliminated. Will have to consider this. Even though this is assembled, I built a BH...

Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up

After buying a Magni and Magni 3 for family members, finally ordered Schiit for me. The Loki and 6" Pyst are on the way. It will be used with the Pono Player and Koss/Massdrop ESP 95X electrostatic headphones. Looking forward to replacing the ADC eq. Sigh, Fedex. They only had to move the Loki...

1st image shows velcro strip covering complete back of earpad. 2nd image is front of earpad, with gap in velcro to reduce soundstage robbing reflections into ear. It is an easy mod and is totally reversible. The length of the Velcro strips can be changed to tune the sound. It is amazing how much...

Bet Koss will sell you an ac adapter as a part. Give them a call. Great company. Do not buy the iFi 9v adapter. It hums horribly with the Koss. Good luck.

Yes, but it won't be until next week. The strip of Velcro goes all the way around the back of the headphone and stops on the front where it is shown in picture. Even if people don't want to use the stock pads forever they should try the mod. It really shows how changes in pads change the sound...

Planars are probably more susceptible to damage from extreme pressure changes than electrostats. Planars have either wires or circuit board like traces on the diaphrams. These are usually copper or aluminum. If the diaphram gets twisted, the metal could stay deformed or could even unbond and pop...

They do sound better after being on. They really hit their stride after 3-4 hours. My Acoustat full range electrostatic speakers mention the need for the panel to fully charge. Think stats are like a large capacitor. Believe I remember Michael Koss saying the original pads need to be on the...

Mitchell & Johnson - Electrostatz, 2 way hybrid, Headphones Appreciation and Impressions Thread!

Excellent review. You described the MJ2 sound signature very well. Looking forward to reading your thoughts on the new ear pads. Unfortunately, Mitchell & Johnson ceased operations a while back. KOSS ESP-950 Thread

Don't know if it would be damaging or not. 4v might overdrive the inputs of the energizer. If Koss put the volume controls on the input of the energizer, you should be fine. If on the output, there could be overload. If there's overload you could hook a passive volume control inline, like the...

Have the KS yellow and 3 black players. Doubt we will see another player so focused on sound quality, for many years. Discrete components! Who else does that in a portable? No WiFi, Bluetooth, Android, EQ, or other junk to get in the way of the signal. Thanks to Neil Young, Ayre, and Charley...

You are correct, digital EQs do not negatively affect the signal like analog. But, they do negatively affect the signal. Analog has flaws as does digital. Unless you believe man has managed to build something perfect. Here is what Schiit Audio digital guru Mike Moffat says about digital EQ...

You are comparing headphones that do opposite things best. Dynamic headphones, including planars do bass best. Electrostats do high frequencies best. The only planars I've heard are the Hifiman totl of about 4 years ago. These were $4000. They were hooked to a $2000 ladder dac and $2000 Ray...
