There are some strange (but not bothersome) quirks to using my Compass DAC over toslink with win7 ultimate x64. When fed from my motherboard's onboard realtek, I can play all the way up to 24/192; from an x-fi platinum, 24/96; and from my xonar DX (which is what I currently use) only 24/48...

i have both hd595's and hd600's (which i'm told are quite like 580s). since it you seem to primarily be after circumaural cans that are driven decently by a portable amp, i highly recommend you sell your 580s and pick up some hd555/595's. they're much more easily driven, and imho much less...

I've got it being fed from my computer's xonar dx via toslink, and like you, I've got some regular computer speakers hooked up as well, but via the DAC out rather than the pre-amp. Primarily driving my new HD600's
