I moved from the DT990 to the D7000. The quality of the bass is so much better with the D7000.

Can anyone educate me on this for a little bit.    The DX100, how does it compare with the HM-801?   Does it benefit substantially with an amp?

The Hornet will amplify all the good and bad points from your source. I find that after 125 hours or 150 hours there is quite a substantial change. Another 250 hours to hit the 400 hours burn in mark.

Are they much more comfortable than a bowl pad?

Lower end Grados are great. And before long you'll be tempted to upgrade to a RS1 or MS Pro.

I fully agree, though I'm on the Alessandro side of the fence. But don't dismiss the 701 yet. I tried one that was burned in for 700hrs. It shined with progressive rock, ala, Dream Theater.

Darn it. 7 weeks ago I first bought a MS1. Last week I bought a MS Pro. Now you guys are tempting me again.

Why not the Alessandro MS Pro. More neutral than the RS1 too. Does Rock and metal better than good.
