Yup, even the HE400se does not like the HP jack. Speaker taps are the way to go. Here is what I use for the HE400se and HD600 on HK...

The HE500 is generally warmer sounding and has less detail compared to a properly amped HE-6.

There's no school like old school. I do all my EQ from an analog Realistic 12-band EQ box, and it works really well. I got mine off Ebay...
