I agree with aqsw. The high end/compact market segment has few choices. The Fuji X10 is the overall best performer that matches the posters desires. However, don't expect to achieve DSLR speed from a small sensor. It just won't happen.

I haven't seen it mentioned, but Uncharted 3 has fantastic sound design throughout. Enjoyable on headphones, but even more so on a home setup for the sense of impact.

Final Fantasy II (SNES), which is really Final Fantasy IV (Later released on the DS, etc) is my favorite music from the SNES era. So glad the re-releases brought about real instrumentals and compositions.    Did anyone play Lagoon for SNES?

Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch, soon to be released on the PSN, though I own the soundtrack, is dazzling. Maybe not in the same realm of things you are discussing, but a real sweeping, wonderful composition of music. 

Just to add to the suggestions; although slightly above your budget at about mid $500's from a proper dealer, the Paradigm Millenia CT's are a fantastic choice if you want to keep a 2.1 setup.
