i had a ton of old original iPhone earphones lying around so i gutted them to learn how they work, i then fused them with the original triple fi cable, the cheap 20 dollar one they include with the earphones themselves, took about 4 hours with my crappy soldering iron

sadly it says not recommended for iPhone 4S due to echo effect, i was thinking about this one and sanding down the pins but i would really like a three button remote
