Hi Guitarded, This is because they went on backordered suddenly due to high demand. They were not backordered and there was no supply shortage until Denon suddenly stopped supplying to not just retail stores but also distributors as well.

The D5000 sold out a while ago as well and we are waiting for them to come in. Apparently the shortage for D5000 is also there but not as several as the D2000.
