The Nameless Guide To PC Gaming Audio (with binaural headphone surround sound)
Ho hum, I've looked through more of the available boards and as far as I can tell ALC1150 is the only option now for micro-ATX and mini-ITX (except for the EVGA Z97 Stinger, which appears to be a poor product at an insane price.) So by default one decision is made, it has to be Realtek. As...- IanM

The Nameless Guide To PC Gaming Audio (with binaural headphone surround sound)
My question is for a couple of new PCs to be built from scratch, so it's really a case of trying to make a best guess on which will be the most adequate substitute for CMSS-3D headphone. Right now I'm back to only using an old Core 2 Duo system with Linux, it's got some old Asus specific Realtek...- IanM

The Nameless Guide To PC Gaming Audio (with binaural headphone surround sound)
Hi all, does have any thoughts or know of a good comparision between latest Realtek ALC1150 vs Sound Core3D (with the full range of SBX studio features) for someone wanting to buy a new Z97 motherboard and not able to fit a soundcard due to lack of space? It seems to me that there is limited...- IanM

JDS Labs C5/C5D (pg96) portable amp/amp+DAC
Quote: That's a very interesting bit of info, thanks. I hadn't really thought about this detail. Does the 02 work in the same way? or is this an advantage for the C5?- IanM

JDS Labs C5/C5D (pg96) portable amp/amp+DAC
Edited my post, the IEM bit is probably irrelevant to use on the desktop, but the no channel imbalance is the key reason I'm interested in this.- IanM

JDS Labs C5/C5D (pg96) portable amp/amp+DAC
How suitable is the C5 as a desktop amp? does it charge whilst in use? I read somewhere that the C5 is recommended for IEMs/headphones of 32Ω or greater, but the C5 output impedance is stated as 2Ω on the specification page. I'm considering some Sony earphones that are 16Ω, so by the ⅛...- IanM

X-Fi Xtreme: are any particular editons good or bad? Windows drivers post XP?
Thanks :) I was really hoping that you might answer as you really seem to know your X-Fi's (I also just bought a Titanium HD in preference to ZXR based on your discussion in your binaural thread - I wanted the HD also for some retro games but on a newer system, iirc you said that where supported...- IanM

X-Fi Xtreme: are any particular editons good or bad? Windows drivers post XP?
EDIT: card is gone so the questions are moot, but thanks to Nameless for the quick history lesson below, it's much appreciated! There is a small possibility that I could get an X-Fi xtreme for approx €30-€35, I need to find out which version it is, but I have questions anyway as I've...- IanM

Recon3D *USB* or other HRTF positional audio solution for SFF / mini-ITX systems? CMSS, Dolby Headphone & THX Trustudio Pro
The concept behind the Recon3D USB soundcard seems great, but it doesn't look like a product that has great sound quality and as far as I can tell there is no CMSS or Dolby Headphone. So I'm wondering, what alternatives are there that might be of better sound quality and/or allow users to choose...- IanM

Hifiman RE272 now available
I'll be watching the feedback, reviews and comments with great interest. I've had the RE262 for a few weeks now, and while I'm holding off making a definitive judgement until I've had more time and figured out how to get the best fit, I do like them a lot. However I have been wondering if the...- IanM
