groups that deserve a box set and haven't gotten one yet
Nick Cave King Crimson (do they have one already?) Split Enz ELO But the caveat is that these are done right. Not as in 8 sides of previously released material and 2 sides of unreleased. At that point just put out a CD of the unreleased stuff and be done with it. Come to think of it Nick... -
The most heartbreaking guitar solos into prog / rock?
I am not as keen on the studio version but Eddie Hazel of Funkadelic guitar solo on Maggot Brain is pretty deep. Supposedly George Clinton told Eddie to play "like your momma had just died." -
The Place for Posting Your Recent Hauls
Post new recordings that you have bought or an order you were thinking of putting in. This thread can be a way of soliciting feedback of good/bad choices and pointing people to other things that you think they might like. I think it is also informative in seeing groupings of very diverse styles... -
Favourite Live albums.... (:
Hawkwind - Space Ritual The Who - Live at Leeds or Isle of Wight Talking Heads - The Name of this band.......... Genesis - Live King Crimson - Absent Lovers -
Anyone like Renaissance?
I liked Turn of the Cards a bit. Maybe I should go relisten. My favorite WRC guy says that Ashes are Burning is their best: Renaissance Too bad it is only available as an expensive import. -
Recommend me some phenomenal vocals
If you like prog then its imperative that you give Peter Hammill and Van Der Graaf Generator a try. Yes its dark and dissonant and will scare small children and your girlfriend away but I think they're brilliant: YouTube - Darkness (11/11) - Van der Graaf Generator -
Favorite Musical Discovery of the Past Year
All old stuff I know, but I don't care................. Van Der Graaf Generator: a PROG band where the virtuoso is the leader singer you say? Hammill is my all time favorite vocalist along with Peter Gabriel. Love: Arthur Lee's humanity is something unique in the rock pantheon. BB's... -
Record store indecision
I can only comment on the Who and would pick up any of the following if I were you: Quadrophenia - expansive, emotional art rock Tommy - the 2nd ever rock opera Who Sell Out - a great pop concept album, simpler than the above two Who's Next - too radio friendly but no bad songs here Who... -
Largest Artist Collection?
Dylan - 27 Genesis - 13 Nick Cave - 15 Pavement - 15 Pere Ubu - 21 Pink Floyd - 13 Kinks - 26 Who - 17 -
King Crimson - Thumbs up - Thumbs down
Its never that easy a question especially when you are talking about progressive rock, a genre in which you have to take the good with the bad. As for King Crimson their output can be quite enthralling at times. 21st Century Schizoid Man for example said as much in its 6 minutes as Rush has... -
Who is cooler- Dylan or Cash?
What does "cooler" even mean in this context? Doesn't really matter since Dylan was the hands down better songwriter. I couldn't care less about the technical aspects and limitations of his voice. -
Which songs have been ruined for you by excessive airplay and. . .
Almost the entirety of the first Cars album. Never need to hear that again. Roxanne by the Police. Didn't help that I had to hear it 40 times over a three day stretch on a field trip to NYC back in '87. -
when you listen to music, does an artist's personal life/views effect your enjoyment?
Fortunately for me the people I really like are never diametrically opposed to my POV. I just saw this clip from Arthur Lee of Love and he surprised me a bit with his bluntness on the politics of the day: http://youtube.com/watch?v=vC8V4x_O53M Still Arthur's ideals and beliefs, whether he...
