The 100 Greatest Pieces of Classical Music
Exactly. It was a very brave and bold move to put the Ring Cycle ahead of the 9th symphony. I don't really know the b minor Mass well enough to comment on its merits at the very top, but I think, after struggling to throw off the many layers of Wagner-enthusiast I have, giving the Ring...- FlyingKiwi

The 100 Greatest Pieces of Classical Music
Oh my. A list of the 'top' 200 pieces. One could discuss those placements endlessly. It is also interesting to see their lists of the top conductors, pianists and violinists. Plenty of interesting choices, and some sad omissions, on those lists, too. Like, ummm, Karajan at the top of the...- FlyingKiwi

The 100 Greatest Pieces of Classical Music
The Sibelius second symphony is already on the list at #63. The Karelia suite is nice, but don't we then start to get into concepts of 'light weight vs heavy weight' music, a discussion which might also apply to the Saint Saens symphony, too! Not to disagree. I'd like to put several...- FlyingKiwi

Introduction about HS2 headphone signal switcher.
I had a look inside the unit. It is, unsurprisingly, a very simple circuit, with each channel having its own potentiometer (as we can see) and IC to modify the sound level. I didn't see anything that would immediately/obviously indicate a high output impedance, so wouldn't mind guessing...- FlyingKiwi

Introduction about HS2 headphone signal switcher.
I ended up getting one of these units for only $25 on Amazon. It solves the headphone balancing challenge, and for only $5 more than the no-longer-available Fiio unit, seems like the best game in town now ...- FlyingKiwi

FiiO X3 & X5 USB Drivers (for Windows only)
Hi Many thanks for sharing these. I tried installing on a Win 8.1 computer, got an error message that the installation failed, a problem with pre-installation of TUSBAudioks.inf. Can you suggest what this is about and how to fix? Tks- FlyingKiwi

Mystery Low Frequencies
Hi Thanks for the comments about sampling limitations, which is exactly the sort of thing I was wondering myself and why I made sure the settings were visible for people to see. I'm using Audacity. What would you suggest to be better settings to get a more valid result? Tks- FlyingKiwi

Mystery Low Frequencies
A pipe organ typically goes down to 32 Hz, a few go down one more octave to 16 Hz. So (to Silver Ears) I don't think there's any way that sound energy at eg 5 Hz came from the organ. Don's suggestion about ambient noise sources is a good suggestion (thank you, Don); I'm a bit surprised...- FlyingKiwi

Mystery Low Frequencies
Hi I was looking at the frequency distribution in a 6 second sample of a piece of organ recording (recorded at 24/192) and noticed an astonishing amount of low frequency energy. I believe, in this sample, the lowest note is probably a 32 Hz C (you can see a clear peak at 32 Hz and harmonics...- FlyingKiwi

Fiio X3 and Sennheiser HD-800
Just to keep it real, don't overlook the two posters who currently use HD800s with an X3 and are perfectly happy with the result.....- FlyingKiwi

Introduction about HS2 headphone signal switcher.
Two thoughts about this interesting product. 1. Noting the great deal of interest and the presence of competing products also available, is it possible for Fiio to consider doing another production run, but perhaps selling at $40 instead of $20 so they get some financial incentive for doing...- FlyingKiwi

The 100 Greatest Pieces of Classical Music
Excellent analogies. Thanks for adding to the fun and thought provoking nature of this thread. Oh - another analogy. 'Where is your favorite place to go on vacation?'. Cheers- FlyingKiwi

Setting Up An ABX Test + Simple Guide to Ripping, Tagging & Transcoding
Yes, I think that may be a suitable compromise. If no difference is heard, then the matter is moot; in the astonishing scenario that a difference is detectable, one needs to research a bit further. Thanks for your further comments.- FlyingKiwi

How to Ensure Foobar is outputting correct sample frequency/depth?
Hi I'm trying to do some ABX testing using Foobar 2000, and also to create a simple set of steps for other people to do the same. Although in my case, I output from Foobar to an external DAC which displays the incoming sample frequency rate and bit depth, I know that many people don't...- FlyingKiwi

Setting Up An ABX Test + Simple Guide to Ripping, Tagging & Transcoding
Hi Thanks for this fast reply, and it might make sense to ask in the Sound Science section too. But, a quick follow up question to your comments. How do you know, with the WASAPI interface, that the sample rates are being fed direct into the sound card's DAC without any change? I...- FlyingKiwi
