Review by 'derred' on item 'Superlux HD-668 B'

It's hard to review products that are at either end of the pricing spectrum. It's hard not to be critical of products who's high price makes you expect the best. By the same token, it's human nature to root for the underdog. So please take it with a huge grain of salt when I say: "These are the...

    3D Audio (Binaural) Audiobooks

Thanks for the recommendation. Hopefully things like VR headsets will help popularize the medium, and maybe we'll get some 3D audio tech that way. If not, VR tourism like demonstrated here could be interesting.   Have a great weekend!

    3D Audio (Binaural) Audiobooks

Hey guys, in case any of you are interested, I've found a pretty interesting looking website offering both free samples and one complete short horror story. https://owlfield.com/productions/   They sound pretty good and it's heartwarming for me to hear the word binaural used properly (in...

Close to pulling the trigger on a Little Dot Mk II. Anything you'd recommend instead?

Have you considered the DarkVoice 336SE? It's all tube, not a hybrid. I haven't tried it myself, but it gets pretty good reviews. It's supposed to have a pretty deep/dark sound and be tube-y (because that's a word that I want to see in the dictionary :D).   Good luck!

Review by 'derred' on item 'AKG Acoustics K240 Monitoring Headphones'

I'll start off with the cons: They are large (not suitable for smaller heads) Hard to drive (600Ohm will do that) May be uncomfortable for long periods of time due to relatively thin pads Non-detachable cable May sound shrill to some because of bass roll-off and bright treble   That's the...

A Question About Headphone Impedance Curves

MindsMirror is right. I would just add that normally an amplifier would just increase the voltage and current equally on all frequencies. There are some amps that use low/high pass filters and then amplify things separately. For 55 Ohm headphones amps shouldn't be required, but if you find...

    "Crisp" headphone?

Just to throw in my 2 cents, I would recommend the AKG K812s (open back) or the K872s (if you prefer closed backs). I really enjoy the open soundstage on the K812s and, while they sound a bit clinical as they're meant for studio production not audiophile listening, on a good amp they really...

Reply to review by 'derred' on item 'Marshall Audio Major II Headphones (Black)'

Congrats on the new addition to your "fleet":) Worth mentioning that the Bluetooth version has a bit more emphasis on the mids due to the built-in Bluetooth amp, so your mileage may vary slightly from the "normal" model.

    Introduction, help, and recommendations.

From a technical standpoint the X3 II already has amplification built in as well as an above-average DAC.   From a bare metal perspective the X3 II has the following chipset configuration: OPA1642 (Low pass filter) -> OPA1642 (voltage amplification) -> LMH6643 (current amplification) While...

Review by 'derred' on item 'Marshall Audio Major II Headphones (Black)'

TLDR If you like the look of these and are willing to accept their limitations as portable headphones, you could to a lot worse than the Marshall Major II. This is especially true if you manage to get them for the 60-70$ that they are going for now. The only downsides are that are closed back...
