Vintage Beyerdynamics DT990 600 ohm: help with complete disassemble

He means cotton wool stuffing. I used the synthetic poly fill version on mine because it is more elastic and won't break down or lump as much or as quickly. Hypoallergenic according to the bag too.

Vintage Beyerdynamics DT990 600 ohm: help with complete disassemble

The stuffing material makes a huge difference as well. When I switched the stock pads from nasty old foam to poly fill, the sound became very neutral; the bass went way down and the mid way up and the highs stayed about the same. I will try leather and use poly fill. I will also pierce holes in...

Vintage Beyerdynamics DT990 600 ohm: help with complete disassemble

The Plastic plate with the driver comes out fairly easily with a small flat head screw driver. There are small gaps to wedge the blade in and start prying up the plate. This job goes MUCH easier if you pop the head band off of each cup as you work on it. I got the driver assembly plate out in...

Options for detachable terminated headphone cable

Mini XLR seems very popular but pretty much requires custom cables. I am not completely averse to that but having cheaper ready-made options also has its allure. I was thinking about terminating at the headphones with RCA. That way I could make my own higher quality cables AND use store...

    Beyer DT770 Pro/ 80 Detachable cable MOD

You think so? I can't find a single example of someone using RCA instead of a proprietary option or mini XLR. It concerns me and makes me wonder if I am missing something. I want to do the RCA because I can easily switch cable length and output type. I can even make my own cables if I want to...

Vintage Beyerdynamics DT990 600 ohm: help with complete disassemble

OK, since I popped them apart for the photos I decided to try one more time. I heated them with a heat lamp until I noticed the housing starting to try to warp (30 minutes at 18 inches away). I turned off the heat and let it sit for a minute and then popped that bottom piece off no problem. Now...

    Show us your vintage headphones!

Quote: Yeah. The pads were absolutely done with. I restuffed them but I am still not 100% pleased. The velour pads from my 770 made it sound like garbage, so I am ordering some pleather replacements to try. I am contemplating going nuts on this set to make them something really special...

I was thinking about doing this mod. I am glad I read the whole thread!

    Beyer DT770 Pro/ 80 Detachable cable MOD

These mods are awesome. I came across a vintage set of DT990 and stumbled upon these threads. I caught the headphone mod bug! I will be doing some really simple mods to my DT770, including this jack mod. I am thinking of a RCAx2 to 3.5 for the DT990. Maybe some color changes for both of them....

    Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro 80-Ohm Thread

I have the DT770 pro 80ohm. I like them for mobile music. I also use them for the occasional editing project I fiddle with. I actually originally got them for that reason and I liked the way they reproduced recordings. I just picked up some DT990 600 ohm cans and I much preferred the 770 from...

    Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro

I have the 80 ohm DT770 pro. They are great for everything. I use them for music, games, movies. They sound great on an ipod too. I have never really put an amp on them.
