I am studying composition, and as a result I listen to a lot of classical. My esoteric interest is in microtonal music, ie, music in tuning systems other than twelve tone equal temperament, which is the standard tuning now used in western european cultures, and increasingly the rest of the world. I also have a special love for modern classical, even if that's an remarkably wide term. I am a little light on the common practice period, but I like listening to baroque and renaissance music a lot.
I like to listen to the music of different traditions, including Indonesian gamelan, Japanese Gagaku, classical Indian music, and Arabic/Turkish Maquam music.
As for rock/pop/electronic/other some artists I like are Radiohead, Nine Inch Nails, Autechre, The Flaming Lips, The Beatles, Sonic Youth, Aphex Twin, Franz Fertinand, and of course others.
I like listening to jazz, but I don't pretend to be a connesoir. I listen to some of the obvious greats, like Miles Davis and Coltrane, but I haven't fully explored this area yet.
