Given the th-x00 sound differences, I would assume that the wood could have a definate impact on the sound and should be considered as a factor.

As far as closed headphones, i dont see many others in your budget. If you like iems, there is a lot of neutral options. I havent personally heard them, but many reccomend etymotics

Im looking in to purchasing one of the rev 1 lcd 2s; should I be worried about the life expectancy of the driver or any other issues? I figured if its lasted this long, it must be a pair that has not had an QC issues.

I second the k612. As far as neutral goes, AKG seems to be the best at displaying it and the k612 is no exception.
