budget minded
- Headphone Inventory
- AKG K44 sealed
vintage JVC semi open over the ear
Cowon earbuds
I'd like to get Audio Technica AT-50s, especially if they were offered with short cords for portability
- Headphone Amp Inventory
- Art Audio USB DualPre AD/DA preamp
- Source Inventory
- PC
Cube C30 mp3 player
Sandisk Clip+ mp3 player
sony TCD 5 portable cassette recorder
Art 9v battery phantom power unit.
Shure PZM mics on a binaural dummy head
Panasonic SA-XR55 receiver DAC (faster & more detailed than sony)
Sampson large diaphragm condenser mic
with plans of getting a Western Digital WD TV Live Hub Media Center feeding room EQed WAVs into a Schiit Audio Gungnir DAC
- Cable Inventory
- Monster Cable 10 gauge speaker wire with gold bananas soldered for receiver out and gold pins, or bare wire into speakers until i get spade lugs. the rest of my interconnects are pretty generic, especially the radio shack grey plastic 1/4" monos out of my DualPre and back in. i know cables can make a little difference, but the difference between 10 gauge monster cable and zip cord was very subtle. i'd rather get better equipment than cables
- Power-Related Components
- Panasonic SA-XR55 class D receiver & DAC with plans to upgrade to a TBI Sound Millenia MG3 30wpc class D amp after getting an outboard DAC and will run it off a 12v car battery I have I was planning on using for a bicycle system and might try a 24 linear power supply, but batteries are supposed to yield best sound with this unit
- Other Audio Equipment
- Energy RC-10 speakers with ports plugged. very detailed sounding speakers with fast treble and really punchy bass, though too revealing of my class D amp's clinical side, but overall much better in most ways than Mission M71s and Celestion Ditton 100s that had flimsy cabinets, JBL 6 1/2" ported 2 ways that did have bigger bass and even my NHT Superzeros that had less bass and treble extension, but a warmer and more forgiving midrange. I'm planning on amp & DAC upgrades to take advantage of the higher resolution of the nice RC-10s I call "poor man's B&Ws", but would expect that my 5 1/4"aperiodic woofer is tighter sounding than 6 1/2" ported, though Bowers does make really nice tweeters, but Energy's ones are nice too and not metallic sounding like the NHT Classic 3s I considered.
- Audio-Related Tweaks
- 4 cinder blocks as speaker stands with plans to at least line back corners of room with 5 1/2" rockwool bass traps
- Music Preferences
- mostly instrumentals, and especially anything but heavy metal and other anger music like gangsta
- Gear-Fi
- Element 42" widescreen LCD. It has lousy connectivity with a bogus tosilink out and serious dynamic range issues on low contrast darks, but it gets the job done and is acceptable on PBS etc. I thought that we'd FINALLY have affordable oleds by now, but they're only hitting the market now and are unobtanium. I'd like a set with better picture and especially a digital out I could feed the Gungnir when I get it as the TBI amp is a 1 input deal.
