If you don't mind about bulk, especially if you're biking (usually w/ backpack) you can just use an PCDP w/ mp3 encoding. Cheap and stores 700 mb. Or you can bust out an old mini disc player. Those won't get damaged while riding.

Regarding firmwares, is it possible to have an update that enables decoding of foreign music formats? LIke can the player, with upgraded firmware, start playing .flac or .ogg?
