I've never experienced sound cracking using Google Play, but on the same headphones have experienced it using Samsung's music player.

Also, in terms of longevity, the E12 is meant to be their top of the line amp currently. For purely amp purposes, the E12 should serve you better in the long term, especially if you add more headphones to your collection.

I actually upgraded from the Clip+ and was very pleased with the sound quality.
