One of my photographic subject is Yabusame, that is a traditional horse back archery since the samurai era.
Click on the pictures to enlarge.

This past weekend, I went to take Yabusame pictures to Odawara. Odawara is famous for plum trees and this event is to celebrate the plum festival.
Archers wear traditional cloths and they ride a horse with archery. They are mostly veterans, some may young and few are female.

Horses of nowadays are evolved way faster than the Samurai age, hence the archers required tremendous concentration to shoot and take control of the horse at the same time.

I shoot these photos at manual exposure, because the sun was at back-lit and the motion blur makes pictures active.

Here you can find some Yabusame info in English.

That's quite interesting, Ive never thought about the differences in horses from then compared to now. What type of targets did the archers shoot at and how far were the targets from the archers? -- Or are those black diamond shaped items in the background the targets?

Hello

I saw your beautiful pictures of Yabusame and we would really love to use one of them in our travel magazine. Do you have a high resolution version you could send me that I can show to the editor with a view to licensing it from you please?

My email address is jdoggett@therivergroup.co.uk

Kind regards
Jenni
