Wow I can't believe there is no mention of Star Citizen in these forums. I am 100% obsessed with this game. Are there any other Citizens on head-fi?

I'm looking forward to this game, but my hype died off around 2 years ago. It's just too much waiting. And seeing what happened to other games that were in development for a long time / been in early access for years, I vowed not to preorder anything until the product is released and I get to read numerous reviews.
I like how Rockstar handles marketing for their games - they keep everything secret until the product is nearly finished, allowing the hype to reach critical levels on the release.
While I love the concept of Star Citizen and look forward to see it released, I have doubts it will deliver everything it promises (look at One Man's Lie), and it is just taking too long, and is too expensive already.

I'm kinda looking forward to it if they deliver even half of what they promised (for which that Gamescom 3.0 alpha demonstration makes some good progress), but they may have become too ambitious for their own good and released too little over the years.

That, and some of their design decisions put me off, like I get the feeling they wouldn't know how to design a proper spaceship cockpit at all, let alone the proper controls or flight systems for one.

The biggest nail in the coffin was probably how they treated VR as something to tack on later like any other input method instead of something that needs to be tested through development to make sure the entire UI works in it and they don't do stupid things like locking the viewpoint for those entry/exit animations. There's more than a fair share of Rift CV1 and Vive users feeling burned about that right now.

It's enough to seriously have me consider offering up both my Super Hornet and Carrack to anyone who's still interested.

With that said, I'm quietly awaiting every new build that releases and lurking the Hardware subforums there in the meantime. Games like this aren't built in a day, or even a year.

I think things are finally coming together because supposedly with the release of 3.0 at the end of the year we will be able to land on planets.
I'm excited.

If this game doesn't deliver on its promises it will be one of the final nails already in the coffin of crowdfunding game development. A lot of people got burned with the underwhelming experience of no mans sky. The only game in the genre that has come even close to delivering on its product Is Elite Dangerous...which is what I'm currently enjoying. However, like Star Citizen, Elite dangerous has a pretty steep learning curve and many people new to the game will struggle especially if they are playing it on mouse/keyboard* and have no intention to spring for a X55 Rhino or Thrustmaster Warthog - though warthog IMO is a bit inappropriate for space sim games as it is designed to simulate an A10 control configuration..not ideal for controlling a VTOL like the Retaliator.

*which are woefully inadequate.

I think so too, the only crowdfunded game that turned out to be good that I can think of is Pillars of Eternity. Early access, preorders and crowdfunding are the cancer of today's PC gaming. In theory they were really good financing mechanisms to help indie devs with great ideas make games they couldn't do before, but it all went in a totally wrong way. Now we see either half-finished games stuck in EA phase forever, or massively overhyped, overpre-ordered crap that doesn't look anything like E3 trailers.
Sadly all this is fuelled by the community that supports that kind of behaviour by paying big bucks to the devs way before they should. I did it few times back in the day, now I always wait for the reviews and if they are good, I wait few weeks longer for any potential patches before I play something. There's no need to rush and play anything on day one.

Obsidian entertainment were facing an uncertain future, they turned to crowdfunding the development of a new IP and it paid off for all involved. Obsidian have a track record of making some compelling, meaningful stories..they aren't that good at world building, like Bethesda softworks is. If Obsidian and Bethesda teamed up to produce a game, I'm sure I will not be the only one who would all but THROW money at it. I'm amazed they have never directly collaborated on a project before.  Having said that when you are paying for crowdfunded products, which are yet to be released [or still in the design phase] you are in a way : gambling with your money, as there is no reassurance that you will get the product you paid for, or it will be in the form that you originally wanted it in.

Well if Star citizen flops, we still have elite dangerous...silver linings and all that.

Im with Derek Smart on Star Citizen at this point. I backed the game, but I dont think it will ever be what they say it could be.

Well it is bound to be better than no mans sky. Elite dangerous is distinctly better than NMS IMO - even with it's specialised hardware requirements, principally you need a HOTAS to play it. Saitek have been making hardware for SC, But saitek have been falling on hard times financially speaking. I hope they can keep it together.

What my cat leaves in the litter box is better than No Man's Sky.

What Id like to see is CCP integreate Dust 514 and Project Valkyrie into EVE. I think theyd have a great meta game on their hands
