I am interested in a detailed explanation what is the real difference between the mobile amps available (or amps integrated into the DAC chips like ESS 9028) and standalone "big" amplifiers? I am a little bit confused why would I need such a big dedicated device if even a small chip can drive my 250Ohm headphones with good sound quality and volume? And amps are only there to amplify and not to change sound signature.

I have an LG G6 phone (Quad-DAC version) and Beyerdynamic DT1770 Pro headphones which pair very good and I am just wondering if any external additional amplifier could improve the sound if I still use LG as a source.
