HifiMAN HE-6 Planar Magnetic Headphone

Well probably not the best amp for a comparison but I used the Oppo HA-1 as it's what was on hand (using the balanced output).

Susvara vs HE-6 (6-screw version) but this is very brief, from about 30-40 mins a/b'ing the headphones, all with CD quality music streamed over Qobuz.

They are more similar than different, so if you like the HE-6 you will like the Susvara I think, the main differences being that the Susvara sounds more open and expansive in it's soundstage, the HE-6 is more intimate. The Susvara also sounds a little fuller overall but without any excess bloat, both have excellent pace and timing, the Susvara just sounds more effortless in it's presentation. Vocals have a tad more substance to them, more presence and body, and they both fair very will in the treble range with excellent extension and clarity.

The comfort is night and day difference, the Susvara is superbly comfortable, wheras the HE-6 is heavier and gets uncomfortable after a short period of time.

Today I will power them off a small 50w T amp and see, but I'll try and smuggle the HE-6 home at the weekend from work and do a little comparison being powered from my Marantz PM-5005 going into the hifiman adapter box.

is the he-6 modded?

Nope, bone stock with pleather pads.

I think a modified HE-6 would probably sound as good as the Susvara, but they cannot compete in comfort, unless maybe with the same headband and alpha pads.

I haven’t heard Susvara but I would think better gear than Oppo HA-1 is needed for separate the wheat from the chaff when comparing any headphone to the HE6.

zmf ori pads, they're are comfy and give the he-6 a very large soundstage.

The eikon pads add a warm tilt to the sound, while the ori pads keeps things relatively neutral.

+1 for the Ori pads on the HE-6. I also tried the Eikon pads and preferred the Oris.

You guys were right, the Ori pads sound really fantastic on the HE-6's. I'll put the Eikon's on next and then back to the Dekoni 900's and do some more thorough comparisons.

I would be really interested to know how the Ori pads compare in performance with the Dekoni pads. I already have the Dekoni pads, but I would also like to try on the Ori pads in order to figure out which ones work best.

I'll do a write-up of all three (and maybe another few) by the next week or so.

For me the BIG question is: how better is this Susvara compared to the HE1000 V2 that I really like ?

Are my vegan pads hopelessly out of fashion now?

I'll do a comparison with them as well. I think comfort wise they're unbeatable, but the Dekoni/Ori and most likely the Eikon pads sound better to me.

+1. I compared the Audeze Vegans to the Oris and the Oris won out for me. They are my pad of choice on the HE-6 now. I continue to marvel at how amazing my fully modded HE-6 sounds (driven by the iFi Pro iCAN).

I'd say the Susvara is tonally closer to the he-1000 while having some of the strengths the he-6 has among other advantages.

Wel, depending on how the he-6 is modded, it's pretty dang close sounding to the he-1000 already. That is compared to an audeze or senn or something.

I was pretty surprised by how close the he-6 and he1k sounded. Took a few days of back and forth to really start to understand the differences.

Susvara is as hard to drive as the HE6 so you will need a powerful quality amp to drive them. HE1000 V2 is not as demanding, power vice as HE6, but still to get them to sing you need a proper quality amp. Chord HUGO doesn’t qualify for neither of them IMO.
