Hifiman he-400i Impressions and Discussion

Yup. Bought my 400i when they were on sale round x-mas for $350CAD. Pretty good deal at that price IMO

That's indeed a great deal. That, as well as the current prices for the HE400i, is making them the best value in the personal audio right now imo. For my preferences the HE400i are at the top of my rather big collection, only challenged by the modded HD700.

Sorry Guys. just quickly (Again)
if handed over to somebody whose handy with soldering, can the stock cable be re-terminated with a balanced connector? assuming V2 with the 2.5mm plugs
Yes, but I wouldn't use the stock cable, might be easier to just build a whole new cable since the stock one is not great due to the 90 3.5mm jack and the covering is a little microphonic to me.

Something I know I was curious about, and when I posted about it before others were too. How does the 400i compare to the 560? Today I drove to the closest store that actually has a decent selection of stereo gear, because I noticed they were also carrying the 560s at the current sale price others have had them for. They are about what I thought/hoped they would be. Basically a 400i+. A little more bass, a little more treble. A fuller sound. Not as mind blowing as the higher priced HifiMans, but then I didn't expect them to be. I may have bought a pair. That said, they're brand new, so there may be some burn in. If the sound changes I'll let you folks know. But for those curious about maybe taking the next step up, first impressions are good.

They arrived. It wasnt easy to mount the ring but did it.
I have to say that i have not a lot of experience and i dont know what is a good sounding pair of headphones.
Definitly it sound diferent. I have to do more A/B comparations. They sound muddy coz the seal but more balanced, maybe.
I didnt compare the stock pads vs the brainwavs leather face to face but i did some kind of front bassreflex mod to the brainwavz, to my taste the sound muddy because of de leather seal. Now the drums sound like its must sound. Amazing.
To my taste when i bought my pair of 400i they didnt have enought bass.

Just a quick one, since i'm deciding between 400i and HD650
I have rather large ears. How "deep" are the earcups compared to a beyer 770 or the HD650? I can wear the DT770 for some hours, but start to feel it pushing on my left ear after 2-3 hours. I haven't had much time with the 650 yet, but they felt a little better in that regard. Since the 400i would be the cheaper option, i'd like to make sure they are 1. comfortable and 2. they are not to analytical/heavy on the high mids.
Concerning number 2: On a scale from HD650 to K701 in terms of Analytical/Warmth, where would you put the 400i?

The HD400i would be a little more comfortable since the opening is a bit deeper but like the HD650 the out of the box clamping force can be a bit much, I did bend mine so that the ear pads are not smashed together when on a stand.

The HE400i is more on the analytical side to me, it doesn't have the smooth mids of the HD650 but is better extended in the lows and highs. I would put the HE400i right in the middle of the HD650 and K701

Thanks for the input.
Guess i'll be ordering from us ebay to germany and give those a try. At 80€ below the HD600 and 140€ cheaper than the 650 it'll sure be nice to get a completely different type of headphone. Sounds like a good second reference for Recording too.

The cord is out on my beloved T1's (original version).

While I figure that out, I'm tempted to buy the 400i at the current price. I've been interested in planars for quite awhile, never have heard any. I like the description of these being detailed and neutral while also having great mids/vocals and a somewhat forward presentation. I don't care about them not having the widest sound stage or most bass (I always liked bass lean, tight, taut, and articulate over quantity or impact). I would use them for about every genre, but perhaps am looking for a little more "natural" or "smooth" sound for an alternative to the T1 for jazz, classical, and acoustic music. Not a relaxed or mellow sound, but something maybe richer in the mids or more mid centric without being overly warm or muddy/dark and maybe more "intimate".

So are the 400i's pretty close to what I'm looking for? Any other competitor at the price (I don't like Senns so no 600/650's for me). I will pair them with an Asgard 2 amp I have on the way.

As far as Hifiman goes, I have HE-500, and HE400i cans. I used to have the HE-560's and although they were great they didn't appeal to my tastes as much as I wanted them to. I preferred the HE-500's. Recently I picked up the HE-400i's and am very pleased. Soundwise, it lays between the HE-500's and HE560's, which is what I want so I'm thrilled, not to mention the stellar improvement in comfort over the HE500. We each have different tastes as well as acoustic properties/heads so what I like, others may not. I also have a pair of HD600's in my collection, I prefer the my Hifimans to the HD600, the He-400i more so the HE-500 and I really like that Sennheiser. I carefully compared, by listening, the HD600 and HD650 and decided on the HD600 because of the mids, so you can see one aspect of the HE500 and HE400i that is important to me.
