hmm. those wooden slats (for want of a better description) are quite wide. it's not the most open of open-backed designs. still, it's just a non-working prototype so early days for this design i would think.

Fostex put on a dummy prototype of a TH-XXX open back style. This doesn't work and is merely an exhibit to gauge feedback from attendees of the e-earphone Portable festival this weekend in Tokyo. I didn't have any concerns with the looks but mentioned sound is (naturally) priority. Further, being an open back using outside is probably not a focus - cos with my TH-900 I could at least use it in a coffee shop, but with these it's probably more a home use.

That cup looks absolutely stunning :open_mouth:

Have anyone tried Fostex premium replacement pads from this eBay seller ? http://www.ebay.com/itm/Premium-Replacement-EarPads-Cushion-Pads-FOSTEX-TH610-TH500-TH900-Headphones-/252489431664

I bought a TH610 replacement pair to fit my TH900 and it is completely amazing sound now. At first sight, it looks more of a TH-X00 pad without swollen foams inside, allowing the user to be closer of the drivers without ears to touch them.
Compared to stock original TH900 pads, it now has globally even more soundstage and instrument separation, while almost being in a 3D sphere (totally a brand new sensation from stock pads).
Also, it has slightly less bass and allows mid-mids and high-mids to express much more and cut delicately and very slightly the “annoying” high freqs (details are still there without being annoying anymore. A total refinement), allowing global TH900 sound experience and brings it to another level. Details are still there, It’s now perfect headphones to me.
With these pads, you guys can understand easily that TH900 definitely does not lack mids at all (quite the contrary).
I listened all genre of musics and didn’t found any fail in any yet. Very impressive.
Totally recommended to give a try (moreover for 25$, definitely worth a try). Really would like to see some people opinions about these pads.
Also, comfort compared with stock is excellent, maybe even better than stock. Can listen to it for many hours without any sign of harm neither warm.

I tried recently original TH610 pads into my TH900 with ring earpiece, and I found sound much worse than stock: bass is emphasizing, not allowing mids to explain fully and are totally covered by bass, have also lost much of details. Soundstage got worse also, it’s like listening mono instead of stereo. And finally confort is not nice at all. Definitely not recommended.

Sorry for my English, tried my best :)

Hope this helps!
Cheers’

I got the TH610 replacement pad per your recommendation. I noticed that the pad doesn't have the plastic rings like the stock pads. Is the ring removable?

Guys, do you believe in DAC burn in?

My Hegel HD 12, which is a dacamp from Norway priced at around 1200$ was touted as a very neutral dac, but the guy at the store told me it had 100 hour burn in time. I was kinda like yeah ok sure bro, didn't think too much about it.. But now, almost 2 weeks later and I swear the sound has changed.

This dac from the get go sounded a tad bit more neutral than when I heard the TH 900 through a magni and dragonfly red as a dac. That setup was more V-shaped, with much stronger bass but also harsher highs. The HD 12 right out of the box was certaintly much more neutral, with a lighter bass impact and less piercing highs - but now, 2 weeks later.. It seems the bass is a tad bit less in quantity than before, the highs even slightly less prominent, and mids seems a bit more forward. I have started to hear even more details in some tracks.

Now what I'm wondering is, if DAC burn in is actually a thing, or if this is simply me getting used to the bass, the forward highs and making sense of all the information? The changes are really quite drastic.

I don't believe in DAC burn in, but I do believe in DAC warm-up. I would say it is more than likely just you getting used to the sound.

Yeah, that was what I was thinking too. I've been sick the last couple of days basically just lying in bed, and when I came back to the sound it seemed so different. I guess its the same if you practice something, say a Judo throw 500 times across a week, take a couple of days off and you're gonna just have a completely different feel of the technique via a combination of both your head and body bein..

ok that analogy didn't work, hopefully someone gets what I'm trying to say

I dont know your dac but the r2r boys, schiit, say they need 250 plus hours.
Chord and us fpga taps guys say meh, no burn in and dont be scared to turn off your dac, so
Im testing susvara this weekend and they are going to burn it in for my tests, so
I guess the answer is it depends
