Hi all,
I have to choose between the 32 ohm version and the 250 ohm version of the Beyer DT880 a friend is offering to sell to me. I use mainly my ipod and occationally my computer (itunes, games) but plan to upgrade to an amp next year. Has anyone compared the 2 versions? Would the 32ohm version sound significantly louder than the 250 on an ipod? thanks for any input!

250Ohm. So they rely less on current.

Most sources these days have enough voltage output to drive it to adequate amount of loudness. YMMV though.

ok, i just tried both v quickly. I am surprised that the volume differences are not that great between the 2 phones using my ipod (unamped). I'ts a little bit louder on the 32ohm but not substantialy. will audition more.

Im about to decide weather I should get the 32 or 250 ohm version of the dt880. It will be very interesting to read your further testing results.
I will use them both amped and unamped. Are any frequencies lacking between them when unamped? Also where is the best deal on the 32 ohm?

I can tell you, my 880's 250ohm version sound pathetic unamped. Muddy bloated mid bass, distant mids, tiny metallic highs. I wouldn't ever consider getting a 250ohm headphone without proper amplification.

Word. Also don't bother with the 32ohm without amping, my DT990 32ohm suck with out an amp. No bass and ear piercing highs.

ok, i got the 32 ohm. Louder and slightly better SQ but not night and day better. Still needs amping. I guess i will go look for a nice 2nd hand hornet or tomahawk now... .Heard from a relieable source that the 32 ohm is a good buy (rare). the hissing/background noise levels are not significantly increased over the 250 ohm.

Thanks for a ll the views.

I have the hd595 50 ohm and it does quite well without amp.
I guess the 880 32 ohm is worse unamped? Have you tried the 595?
Some cans seems to work a lot better than others unamped, even if they have low ohm.

Real men use the 600Ohm version of the Beyers.

I've had my DT880, 32 ohm, for about a week now.  I use an Ipod touch and the sound is gorgeous (only have about 40 hours burn-in).  Seems to have plenty of power.  Never had an amp, so can't speak to the difference you might hear using one.

i know this thread is kinda old but for those finding it these days I'll add to it.

Just saw a pro review of this item where they compared 32ohm to 250ohm to 600ohm

they guy said NOT to buy the 32ohm. Meaning, you are paying for more than what you'll get.
He recomended the 250 or 600 both amped. And only then he said you'll hear the full beauty of these headphones.

Maybe this is why my Beyer Dynamics DT770 (32 ohms) were not that great and I didn't understand the hype.

haha, u listened to that guy nd that is exactly where u destroyed ur perspective towards the 32ohm versions, not ur fault bro because people act in that fashion, i myself being convinced by people saying that 32 ohm version doesn't have that refined sound, got the dt 990 250 ohms nd result is I'm suffering as i also own the dt 770 32ohms. Without the schiit magni 2, u won't be able to get the detailing, separation, soundstage, clarity and overall refinement...loudness is insignificant for me...nd 32 ohms require the fiio A1, nothing else. A lot of people run dt880/dt990 250ohms through the Fiio A3, that makes me laugh !! Hope that they never get to know what they missed !!!
