Jason - does The Source have a physical location with several amps available for A/B with my headphones?  I am thinking a little ahead, and might want to A/B several amps before deciding on one...
If not - any idea where can I A/B some amps?  Does Cavalli have a show room / store??

Yes sir! We have a 1500 sq ft headphone department for you to do all the A/B comparisons you'd like.

Cavalli is in Texas but has no showrooms just pure manufacturing.

I guess that means you'll be in California in November to hear them all in one sitting.

The Hifiman HE-400i are pretty easy to drive, too. I can listen to them straight out of my phone or music player and they sound great. If you keep an eye out you can land them for $250.

I'm guessing the inexpensive Schiit DAC/amp you saw was the Fulla 2. I have the first one and I love it. I might have gotten the Fulla 2 if I didn't already have the Magni/Modi 2 stack.

Hey, Mike.  Interesting that the 400is go as low as $250, since aren't they the better headphone than the 400S?

That's cool you have a Fulla 1.  What headphones does it drive?  Senn HD600/650s?

Yes, I hadn't followed headphone tech for about a year before going to CanJam, so about a year or two ago I almost pulled the trigger on the Modi/Magni stack, as that was the cheapest amp/DAC combo, so that's why I was so surprised to see them making the Fulla 2 for only $99!  So you have both a Fulla and a Magni/Modi 2?  How much better is the Magni/Modi stack?  I'm considering getting that, but probably should just get the Fulla if it drives most headphones, as I'm not about to buy a $1,000 flagship headphone anytime soon.

I got the 400i a couple years ago around Christmas. Usually the Black Friday sales are really good - that's when I found mine for $250. A quick look shows they are back in the $450 range for now. If you can wait a few months for a sale it might be worth it.

Well, the Fulla isn't being produced anymore, although I bet there are still plenty available. The Fulla 2 is a much different design. I haven't heard it, but I like the Fulla. It drives the 400i no problem, but the sound is better with the Magni/Modi 2 U stack. The instrument separation is better and the overall sound is better. Again, though, I can't speak for the Fulla 2, which I might have bought if I didn't already have the M/M stack.

My only experience with Sennheisers are the HD 558 that I have; they were my very first quality headphones. Not a lot of clarity or depth to the sound, but an awesome soundstage.

I've always read that while you want to keep the headphones in range of the quality of the dac/amp, you should buy the best headphones and have adequate amping rather than the other way around.

I tend to be a low/mid-fi guy, I'll get new in ear monitors and headphones, but I stick to inexpensive stuff that punches above its weight class. I literally may never upgrade my Hifimans or Schiit stack, I like them so much.

Make a trip down, go see THE room at The Source. You will thank me later.

I will, but only after the new candidates for eating up my wallet are out and available at THE room...

The room isn't even related to portable audio, its home theater goodness.

Hahaha! Even I thought you meant the headgear dept. I didn't put it together with what we refer to as "The Big McTheater"

I am only 1.5 hrs away. I am not sure if knowing this is good or not (for my pocket book) LOL :)
Is there a list of stuff you are dealer for?

So right here on head-fi you can click on the TSAVJason profile and see at least 90% of the brands we represent in headgear. www.thesourceav.com might expand your understanding of what brands we represent and services we perform overall.

I'm remaining open minded, yet I find it very interesting that the Cavalli Audio Spark does not feature a DAC. And yet, the next version of the Carbon might have one. I'm thinking shouldn't it be the other way around? What are the use cases for a DAC-less ultra-portable headphone amp? I'm far more likely to slap a Hugo 2 onto the Cavalli Carbon decendant and want the Spark to feature a DAC for portability.
