Biggest Disappointment Headphone
Jul 20, 2017 at 2:53 AM Post #151 of 401
How often have we read the following exchange? "Bass on this can sucks! There's no bass!" "Are you nuts? These headphones have awesome bass! Maybe you just need a better amp." I often wonder whether they are talking about totally different frequencies, as well as what kind of bass is good for completely different genres of music.

Definitely true. I think the Sennheiser HD700 is a good example - I auditioned it and thought "damn, this bass is pretty kick ass - for instrumental music". As far as EDM etc went it was, as expected, very underwhelming being an open back dynamic headphone. And the Fostex TH 900 are great for sub bass, slam, instruments etc but its not meaty enough around the mid bass frequencies to really satisfy a bass head without a big bass boost via EQ.

I think the biggest disappointment I've had recently is the Audeze Sine.

It's not because it's a bad sounding headphone, it isn't, but it's not up to the level it should be for the price, and it's pretty unsuited to mobile use, which is how I saw it as being marketed.

Other issues with it is that the black anodized colour (or is it paint, I'm not sure) chips way too easily, it really needs at least the cipher cable or another external DAC/Amp to achieve good listening levels, and don't get me started on that atrocious unwieldy cable that ships with it.

I've had it over a year now, and it's had at most around 4 hours of head-time, which is rather telling as I'm generally all over a new purchase.

That said I'm not selling it as I see it as I now see it as well worth it's price as a very visible reminder on my Shelf of Shame to not be drawn into over hyped kit again.

I wasn't trying to be a smart as#, I was wanting to know how your business operates. I very much favor supporting small business when it is a viable option !

Haha ..... I didn't take your question as being a smartas* our program is very easy. On some products but not all we have pieces that you can arrange an audition with. It's subject to availability of course because there are typically only one or two units of each type in that inventory. Certain brands like ZMF, MrSpeakers and STAX this program is not available yet

I love my HE-500. How do the T1 and other high-end cans you've tried compare?

Thanks

Ive owned both in the past.

HE-500>mids,texture,fun sound
T1>sound stage, imaging, analytical sound (when driven from OTL)

I found the Beyer peaks to be not-my-cup-O'-tea and sold it.
I really enjoyed my time with HE-500 and only the acquisition of the HE-6 was reason for selling my 500s,otherwise I'd still have them

Our return policy isn't like you might expect. If you are not sure of your purchase we have an audition program on lots of products that makes your scenario moot.
Does this audition program extend to people who don't live in Torrence?

The people in Torrance don't get the program because they can come here. The program is only for those that have a hardship getting to a store.

The B&W P3 that I own, I thought it was horrendous when I bought it and thinking they'd run in I kept them... And they barely improved with time. Bloated upper bass/lower mids and rolled off treble makes for a very muffled sound, like you're listening to the music in another room. I demoed the P5 and P7 but Sennheisers of equivalent price sound much nicer and the HD600 blows them all out of the water.

Hahaha ....It just might be. You do need to reside in the continental US.
I'm behind the Zion Curtain, but still in the US. Salt Lake City, UT.

The most disappointing headphone for me is the SR-009. Go figure.

Interesting....

I heard it thru the Blue Hawaii amp and my jaw was on the floor.....In a good way

I've heard it a few times. Once on SRM-007tII, then the BHSE, then the Carbon and finally a DIY T2. Don't get me wrong, it is still and excellent headphone and no issue in understanding why it has the reputation is has. Each time I heard it I took them off and just shrugged my shoulders. It just doesn't grab me. And so wanted it to grab me.

You know how the saying goes... "Never meet your heroes" :)

Haha. That may be very true here! That said, I am still haunted by HE90's... Those... Those are special.

I actually feel similar about the SR-009, great but failed to properly engage me. I much preferred the SR-007(both versions) and the SR Omega. The HE-90 is very special, loved it, as is the bass-heavy R10(the most special and engaging headphone to my ears)
