    713A / 717A Valve Applications?

Ahoy,   I recently came across a box of the Raytheon 717A tubes. A simple pentode synonymous with the VT-269 tube. Though I know it's not good criteria for selection I love their appearance: A smooth flattened bulb with a sideways plate assembly in the middle (picture below). Looking up the...

    Show me your desk!

Naw, no big projects right now. There's just piles of raw cable lying around the desk and connectors rolling around my parts drawer.   The "both sides" piling method looks promising!

    Show me your desk!

I am curious about what your workspace looks like. How do you organize your tools and parts? I need an alternative to just piling stuff to one side.     As an aside, I find a thin, fine knife like the Opinel in the photo to be much handier than wire strippers when dealing with fancy...

    Phenix G3/Chinese Earmax Clone

I am currently using a set of NOS Tesla lot 109 ECC88 tubes in mine. These are very unforgiving tubes and don't work well with fast music at all, but offer good detail. There is also a dramatic bass roll-off. They depend a lot on the specific recording. I much prefer the Phillips PCC88's overall...

    Suspicious ESW9's

I've been looking for some nice travel headphones and was considering the ATH ESW-9. A search on eBay revealed several auctions for those cans at very low cost. However, something seems very "off" about them. Could this be a run of copies? Maybe I'm just being paranoid. I was wondering if...

    Simple Physics RCA Interconnect Review

Quote: Out of curiosity, Myrdin why do you feel the Neutrik plugs to be the best? Also as a correction, Simply Physics use only Neutrik plugs it seems like Given that mine say "straightwire" on them, they seem to be from straightwire. I don't feel they are the best. I do think they...

    Phenix G3/Chinese Earmax Clone

I think I'm the one that said the T7 is more "tubey." By my definition, that is the level of distortion imparted by the vacuum tube. Distortion is not bad in this case. Tubes amplify the sound in characteristic ways. Words like "warm" are often used to describe it. By my perception it is an...

    Phenix G3/Chinese Earmax Clone

It runs lower impedance stuff ok. I'm using mine with 64 ohm ATH-A700's. I do think it would improve with a pair of better, higher impedance cans.

    Olive Oil injected RCA cable...

The conductors look to be separately insulated. So... the oil doesn't even touch? Purely cosmetic.

    Phenix G3/Chinese Earmax Clone

Yes. I've posted a few observations on the previous page. As a simple tube design, the sound is extremely dependent on the tubes you use. So far I've found it quite good with cheap Russian tubes and even better with nice British tubes. What I forgot to mention is; Resonance effects are what...

    Simple Physics RCA Interconnect Review

I recently bought a pair of Simple Physics RCA interconnects from the manufacturer off of eBay. I have a ton of experience with the scientific and DIY aspects of audio, particularly interconnects. Audiophile stuff, I'll leave to the audiophiles. I don't purchase pricey components unless I can...

    Phenix G3/Chinese Earmax Clone

Correct. Customs did open the package but nothing was damaged and I did not have to pay extra. The tubes came packed together with foam in a little tin, which I thought odd, but were unscathed.

    Phenix G3/Chinese Earmax Clone

The manufacturer says that the T7 has higher tube distortion levels (sounds more "tubey"). Therefore, the normal G3 is probably a better option for those that want a relatively accurate reproduction of the source.

    Phenix G3/Chinese Earmax Clone

I've started using the PCC88 tubes from Phillips/Mullard and they do work great, so add that to the list of compatible tubes. It opens up a lot of normally expensive options. I got this set of three for twenty USD and have seen new Telefunken sets go for as little as fifty on eBay. These...

    Phenix G3/Chinese Earmax Clone

After about ten hours burn-in, I am very happy with this little amp. I opted for the standard G3 over the T7 as I am used to a more analytical sound. Does it sound as good as an earmax? Dunno. Is it worth a hundred fifty bucks? Hell yes. The build quality and features are surprisingly good...

    Phenix G3/Chinese Earmax Clone

I was under the impression the Earmax has a very similar design to the Morgan Jones copy and at least one version uses the ECC88 for all tubes. So much to learn... Would this still be a good first all-tube amp?

    Phenix G3/Chinese Earmax Clone

I'm still getting into all tube designs and this looks like a great one to get started with. $160 for a $600 design is appealing. However, I know I'll want to roll tubes. How important is it to match tubes for this and other earmax designs? Finding three matched tubes is difficult and expensive...

After Grado, what next brand must I buy?

My recommendation is Audio Technica. I went with an A700 after the SR60 and it was a nice change. Easily one of the best deals. More comfortable than any Grado I've tried.
