Anyone try out the Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi HD yet? Or any better USB sound card?

Probably asking about the Xonar U1 (the USB one) since he's asking about USB

How can I be a real audiophile if I've been building a library of .mp3 for the last 10 years because I didn't know any better?

This pretty much sums up my opinion.  While I can appreciate some improvements in equipment (e.g. I love my new AV-40s) and encode quality, what matters most to me in the end is the music itself (as long as it is reasonably close).  In the realm of classical music, I'll take a lossy encode...

    Speakers for dorm room

I think I found the problem.  There seems to be some gunk on the connectors.  Even though I could just clean them off, the cables are too short for the way I want to run them (they'll reach but not in the path that I want).

    Speakers for dorm room

I went ahead and got the AV40s, but I seem to be having some problems with the included cables (big surprise there).  The problem is that if I don't plug them in just right (rotated correctly on the source end) an entire channel doesn't work.  I'm not 100% sure that it's the cable's fault, but...

How can I be a real audiophile if I've been building a library of .mp3 for the last 10 years because I didn't know any better?

I can't claim to be able to tell the difference between lossy formats and lossless for the most part (my training is more of making sure I'm personally in tune), and I probably couldn't tell the difference between 256 or even maybe 192 and lossless (apart from file size).  That being said, I...

    Speakers for dorm room

Something I just realized when looking through specification (e.g. size etc), are the m-audio AV-40's $150 for one speaker or for two?  I read that they're 14 lb each, but the amazon link lists the package weight as 16 lb and has the size listed as the size for one speaker.

    Speakers for dorm room

hmmm on second thought I might go with the studio monitors instead since the sub on the logitech won't actually fit on the shelf.  Would the AV30's (or if I can get my brother to help pay for them, the av40's) be sufficient to get a somewhat full sound in a roughly 8.5'x11.5' room (this is...

    Speakers for dorm room

Quote: I listen to a decent variety of music ranging from classical to rock depending on what mood I'm in.  For the most part I'll be probably keeping them at a medium volume (full sound but not too loud I guess).  As for filling the room, I doubt that'll be difficult since it's a...

    Speakers for dorm room

I'm thinking about picking up a set of speakers for my dorm room (Budget <$100).  At this point I have a pair of Sennheiser HD 280s that I use while I'm in the room, but with my glasses and the clamping force that the phones exert, they get to be uncomfortable after some time.  I also have Sleek...

    Sa6 Questions

I can't exactly answer too many of your questions since I don't have the wireless, but in order: 1: As far as I know, only the people at SA know the timeline (if even that) 3: Check up on the portable amps section. Personally I'm waiting for the Fiio E7 to come out to see how that works out...

Oh didn't know that little detail about the LWs. As for the "at this point," said statement will probably apply for a couple years. After I do my currently planned upgrades, I'm going to need the money for other things (say food and such), so odds are unless something breaks, I'll be waiting...

COWON i9/S9 - Sound Quality and the ULTIMATE EQ

I don't own cowon player (I'm still running Rio ce2100), so I have no comment. I do like treble, but I'm almost always able to hear the treble that I want because I'm used to listening for/to it from playing violin in a string orchestra. I just leave my eq (computer and ce2100) on flat unless I...

Next ZuneHD update will include XviD, SmartDJ Playlists. Anyone think this is enough to change their mind about this PMP?

UMS=USB Mass Storage Class (also known as MSC) as compared to MTP (Media Transfer Protocol). And yes, it does in fact the ability to have it act as an external drive ("mass storage device")
