Use the calibrated volume control setting if your amplifier has a volume control. The calibrated setting is for line out adjustment. The variable setting is used if the amplifier does not have a separate volume control. You can also try both ways and see if you can tell which sounds better.

It is a 5 pin XLR connector because I wanted a ground pin on the amp jack to also support unbalanced headphones without having to add an unbalanced jack.

I think they are okay since they all are within BL range of 6-12. I've had other components that had different lettering from the same manufacturer. Just different batches.
