The FiiO X3 2nd gen (ex X3K, X3II) Thread : 192K/24B, CS4398,Native DSD, USB DAC with LO and inline remote
> add a distinction to the folder you are in when browsing albums as the folder title looks like could be one of the albums Not sure what you mean, is it this: when you browse files, the top line shows the folder, and the subfolders below have the same icon and indentation. That's just the same...- Zweistein

The FiiO X3 2nd gen (ex X3K, X3II) Thread : 192K/24B, CS4398,Native DSD, USB DAC with LO and inline remote
Yes I tried to squeeze all the animation that the firmware allows in the sailboat theme, but it doesn't look right. I only use theme 2, fearing the day my eyes will need theme 3, and someone on this forum asked for theme 4 with an even bigger font. So I replaced theme 5 with an adaptation of...- Zweistein

I still use my high contrast white/green on black on github (and two other fishy experiments), plus processing to avoid the album art from interfering. My player is still fine but the fiio.me site that the page links to seems dead.- Zweistein

The FiiO X3 2nd gen (ex X3K, X3II) Thread : 192K/24B, CS4398,Native DSD, USB DAC with LO and inline remote
Don't assume... I did have trouble getting the X3II to recognise the gain values in some MP3 files. Roughly speaking, It likes ID3v2.3 ISO-8859-1 and doesn't like ID3v2.3 UTF-16 and ID3v2.4 UTF-8 tags. Even though It always recognises the "ordinary" values, like title and album name, and the...- Zweistein

Thank you! Didn't realise its potential - also for leaving out the artwork, as I was doing before. In addition, Mp3tag makes it really easy to move the cover art into files, without creating duplicate files for album art repeated in each track. I've written my command-line code in Go on...- Zweistein

The FiiO X3 2nd gen (ex X3K, X3II) Thread : 192K/24B, CS4398,Native DSD, USB DAC with LO and inline remote
I was trying to share information about what I figured out, that's all. But in the mean time, I found another goal: trying to enlarge the 169 pixel vertical space between top bar and progress bar. There are several pixels to be gained without clashing with actual visual elements. The 23 top...- Zweistein

The FiiO X3 2nd gen (ex X3K, X3II) Thread : 192K/24B, CS4398,Native DSD, USB DAC with LO and inline remote
The numbers I mentioned go beyond vertically fitting the full artwork on the screen, they are for fitting in the 169 rows of pixels in between top bar and progress bar. Therefore, in addition to (even bigger) left and right margins, the image needs a top margin.- Zweistein

The FiiO X3 2nd gen (ex X3K, X3II) Thread : 192K/24B, CS4398,Native DSD, USB DAC with LO and inline remote
The vertical resolution is in fact irrelevant for the X3II. You can do 320x320 with a 128 pixel bottom margin, or cut off the bottom margin and obtain 320x192, or anything between. The extra file size for an all black bottom margin is very small, but my point that 320x320 ensures that other...- Zweistein

One of my wishes too... I couldn't believe what you wrote, then I witnessed the same, but in the end I must correct you: it works fine, if you do it right. I initially made several mistakes: Just replacing the cover in Mp3tag is not enough, the file needs to be saved The X3II caches the...- Zweistein

The FiiO X3 2nd gen (ex X3K, X3II) Thread : 192K/24B, CS4398,Native DSD, USB DAC with LO and inline remote
In my experience, the FiiO does respect track order when browsing by album or artist. When browsing in folder mode, alphanumerical filename order is the king, so that's why many of us prefix the filenames. In both cases, the alphanumerical order amongst titles is irrelevant (except probably if...- Zweistein

The FiiO X3 2nd gen (ex X3K, X3II) Thread : 192K/24B, CS4398,Native DSD, USB DAC with LO and inline remote
Change the title itself? You can do Convert > Tag - Tag, and set field TITLE to format string $num(%track%,2) %title%. But I wonder why you would want that. I also wondered if this can easily be reverted, and it can: convert it again with format string $cutLeft(%title%, 3) - assuming that...- Zweistein

I know it's not the point of your post, but that seems like a really easy job in Mp3tag: Select all files, Convert > Tag - Filename, format string $num(%track%,2) %title%, done.- Zweistein

The FiiO X3 2nd gen (ex X3K, X3II) Thread : 192K/24B, CS4398,Native DSD, USB DAC with LO and inline remote
Yes, terribly impractical. I've taken the plunge and created an article listing firmwares on Head-Fi's wiki. Anyone should be able to add/edit their versions there. I've also cooked 3 new "launcher circle" variations (the background of the top menu) and put them on themes 1, 5 and 6 of my...- Zweistein

FiiO X3II DAP firmwares with custom themes
The last regular firmware version of the FiiO X3II digital audio player is 2.0 at FiiO's site. An interesting previous version is 1.4, the last with OTG support (adding storage on the USB port, which is not officially supported but works for most). FiiO allows the firmwares to be customised...- Zweistein

Thank you for all your praise. Quote: I've made themes 5 and 6 the same as theme 1 but with a larger font. Theme 5 with the biggest size that fits vertically (20), theme 6 goes beyond (24) and therefore cuts off the tail of letters (g, j, p, q, y). Even bigger works too, but then the...- Zweistein

Thank you. You're right, I'm getting sloppy. I don't see exactly what you describe, but it freezes when I go down one level in the category choices. It does that when images are missing, and I took them out to save space. Fixed on dropbox. I don't see any problem with "Now playing" though...- Zweistein

Another update of my high-contrast, bold font variation on the firmware, now the same for 1.4 and 2.0. Theme 1 is my favorite and quite green, 2 is the same but covering album art, 3 has lots of colour and a bigger font and a sailboat, 4 is the same but with pacman, 5 and 6 are Fiio's original...- Zweistein

Thank you for your kind words. Also, I didn't like the mess of files I had built up from the various versions, so I finally wrote the script code to apply the 2.0 theme in the 1.4 format (FiiO renamed and moved some files for the better in 2.0). So now my 1.4 firmware has the same themes...- Zweistein

There's a thread on the fiio forum discussing why, in particular circumstances, it actually sounds better as DAC than when playing on its own. There is no answer, it's a mystery. That's misleading. The initial logo displayed before even the firmware update begins, depends on the...- Zweistein

The worst that happened to me while experimenting (so not with versions I and other people share) is a blank or unreadable screen. To recover, you just hook up the X3II to USB or slot in the memory card, copy a different or the original firmware, and boot with update again. Would it be...- Zweistein

If anyone's still interested, I've updated my high-contrast, bold font variation on the 2.0 firmware. I've removed the black-on-white theme and "greenified" some more controls. The 3 odd numbered themes are identical and the 3 even numbered themes are identical. The odd ones show the (ugly...- Zweistein
