    Just picked up the Fiio X3 for $139 shipping from Adorama. I have been wanting to replace my Zune HD. To be honest, I don't listen to portable music that often but when I do, I don't want to drain the battery on my phone. This is a small-ish barrier to entry.

    If you want line out, just use the adapter which has a built in DAC. You will get an analog signal.

    It makes it easier because it's sending a digital signal out (like optical or coax digital). So you just need to plug it in to a DAC. This is even better than using a LOD which relies on on-board DAC.

    So are you guys saying that the "purest" signal you can get from a DAC is to set it at MAX volume through the source/OS/media player? And control the volume through the amp?

    I have a couple of small DAC's including a new Leckerton UHA-4. When I plug it into my computer via USB, I am able to make the music louder or softer by using the volume control in Spotify (or Windows). If it's just a signal, how is this possible? I thought a DAC just converts the digital signal...
