    ONKYO DP-X1 | Dual Sabre Dacs | Balanced | Sabre BTL Amp | MQA | DSD 256 | Android 5 |

New post, as this is a slightly different example from something I know better. Economics here!   Think about the manufacturing and sales of CPU's. The actual manufacturing costs of a 300mm wafer for, say, Intel or AMD/GlobalFoundries, or TSMC is between $3000 and $10000, depending on your...

And it's not just engineering and software design. It's also marketing, administration/planning, distribution, etc.    I remember looking through the bill of parts for a popular flagship Android phone (can't remember which one, but we're talking something equivalent in the market at that...

    ONKYO DP-X1 | Dual Sabre Dacs | Balanced | Sabre BTL Amp | MQA | DSD 256 | Android 5 |

I don't want to derail the conversation, but you do ask a good question.   If you want a DAP with a useful interface and software in the kilobuck range, today, you're probably stuck with (sigh) Astell&Kern and their nonexistent customer support. At least the new A+K's support M3U playlist...

    ONKYO DP-X1 | Dual Sabre Dacs | Balanced | Sabre BTL Amp | MQA | DSD 256 | Android 5 |

What I'm personally more interested in is if the software, especially interface is any good. That will set it apart from what's on the market. And if it will ship with anything better than a primitive drag-and-drop upload system so we don't have to kludge our way with Foobar plugins or Dapper...

    Fostex TH900 vs Senn HD800

And this is why there are so many successful headphone models out there. I have completely different likes to you (I want to actively interact and push myself into the music, with as much neutrality and detail as possible, and with a large soundstage- I do not like the feeling of being pulled...

Does it get much better than the HD800?

Just because you don't enjoy a particular strength or weakness doesn't make the product worse. Anyone can notice strengths, even if they don't value them themselves. That's just being a bit closed minded.   My emotional image comes from the detail retrieval and soundstage of headphones. I want...

Most underrated and overrated headphone? For a bit of fun :)

She was quite unhappy at the Shure's recessed treble, which for her, made it seem wonky, and made the M50's seem balanced in comparison. She is more sensitive to recessed highs than mids, so we had to weigh things accordingly. Good point, though.

Most underrated and overrated headphone? For a bit of fun :)

I think a lot of us here are making too many broad statements and judgements... As they say, "horses for courses." It would be better to say "overrated in aspect X." Example- for people who desire sound staging and detail, who have cash, the HD800 is a steal- to get that last few percent, we...

24-bit audio a con, according to Gizmodo

24-bit audio a con, according to Gizmodo

This reminds me of why I shoot and process photos in 48-bit colour, when it will be viewed, likely, on a screen that can only reproduce 24-bit colour.  (Okay, nitpickers, my DSLR sensor can only output 36 bits, and the other 12 bits are just padding, but you get the picture. I made a pun! yay!)...

Is 80% of "hi-fi" just EQ?

A couple things:    Yes, impulse response is similar to frequency response, in a way. It gives us a way to tell what the highest reproducible frequency could be. However, it cannot be faked/changed based on EQ or any other processing. And not only do we care about the impulse speed, but also...

Is 80% of "hi-fi" just EQ?

But anyway, Sophisticated, granular EQ requires complex circuits that are quite bulky. Anything else, like counteracting square wave overshoot, slow impulse reaction, harmonic distortion, etc, will require DSP. To do that, and to make it into a one puece package, we would have to do this...

Is 80% of "hi-fi" just EQ?

If you check out InnerFidelity, you'll see that there are many other parameters than frequency response (which can be corrected with EQ 80% of the way, as you said). Frequency response is, when making AB comparisons the most obvious difference. There is also Impulse speed, harmonic distortion...

Review by 'Chromako' on item 'HiFiMAN HE-500'

Disclaimer: My opinions are just my own. They do seem to be in contrast to some others' experiences, but we all have different preferences.   I heard great things about this headphone, and really wanted to like it. I can see why they are popular, and they indeed are fun. However, I'm a...

Nice! I really liked how you were so thoughtful in your answers. That's pretty cool. Also, nice picture. So much shiny... I actually was going to compliment you on your lack of fanboyness, and how you supported your opinions with facts. I'm not sure how other people couldn't see that you...

HD800 or LCD2 - questions about long-term comfort and longevity

One benefit of the HD800s is their accommodation of giant eared people like me. It simply has to do with the shape and size of the enclosure/pads. That's what make the Senns so special for me. You can almost forget about them, and I love their low clamping force.

Sealing pre existing holes T50RP need help

As long as the holes you are filling are small, and you are using a reasonable material, there shouldn't be a perceptible difference. Indeed, much less than having one side with a compromised seal. Using something of the density of Blue Tak is generally okay, and use a smart amount- just enough...

    TWag vs Mogami

What you are asking is, ultimately, "do cables make a difference?" Answer: maybe, maybe not. It's the question which has started many vitriolic a arguments here. For more information, check out the Sound Science forum. There are thousands of posts there discussing this, and I think that it...
