    Trying to explore European jazz

Artists similar to Nik Bartsch's Ronin

I, too, would be interested in any suggestions folks might have. I find their music very attractive, but have kind of assumed that they are sui generis. What it reminds me most of is some of Philip Glass' music; for example, his collaboration with Ravi Shankar ("Passages") or perhaps the...

Terry Pratchett has early Alzheimer's disease :(

I'd like to promote my favorite Terry Pratchett work -- his collaboration with Neil Gaiman on the novel "Good Omens". I'm a Discworld fan too, but this book has been special to me for a long time. If you haven't read it, read it! Otherwise, read it again.

Good, jamming jazz? Like the Beastie Boys The In Sound from Way Out!

Stanton Moore's solo albums are awesome. I've plugged these guys a bunch of times on this forum, but what can I say? I'm a fan. Moore is fonky like sweatsocks. Some of the albums have more of an acoustic funk orientation, and Flyin' the Koop is probably the jazziest.

    The Stax thread (New)

Hey folks, Hope you've all been keeping -- I've been scarce because I broke my main rig during the summer, and since I haven't had time to deal with it, being on Head-Fi would just have made me very sad! I'm hoping, though, that one of you folks will have an idea of what to do. Here's the...

Listening to Classical Repertoire--is it possible to hear it all???

This whole thread is a very silly idea. How do you expect to come up with a consistent set of criteria for what composers and pieces are to be included or excluded? Opinions vary by generation, by culture and geographic area, by trend, by 'school', and by individual. There is no way to decide...

    Cuban music

As a musician playing Latin music, some of my favorites are: Big band/Salsa: The Spanish Harlem Orchestra (download the songs Se Formo La Rumba and Sacala Bailar) Willie Colon with Hector Lavoe (albums Lo Mato, Cosa Nuestra, El Juicio) Son (in the style of Buena Vista Social Club): look...

    A capella recommendations

I've listened to (and performed) a lot of a capella music. I never really liked comedic songs that much, but I'm happy to make some general suggestions in the hopes that you might find something you like. Barbershop: A good place to start are with recordings by SPEBSQSA international...

Recommend me some 'aggressive' (?) Jazz

Are you familiar with Mingus' music? I really think that you might appreciate some of it. Start with the album, Mingus Ah Um.

Anyone else tends to hesistate to try new music?

Go to the library to borrow CDs. I find that I'm much more willing to experiment with new artists and styles when I'm not paying by the pound just to hear them. If you're especially resistant to new music, then give yourself a quota (5 out of 10 CDs have to be from outside your usual genres)...

HELP!!!! This is serious...Bridal/Wedding music suggestions needed

Also, how about some Motown or old school soul? There's lots of well known & appreciated ballads and uptempo songs. Temptations "My Girl" Marvin Gaye/Tammi Terrell "Ain't No Mountain High Enough", "Your Precious Love" Martha and the Vandellas "Heatwave" Supremes "I Hear a Symphony" Four...

HELP!!!! This is serious...Bridal/Wedding music suggestions needed

I highly recommend that you check out Charlie Haden's album, 'Nocturne'. It's beautiful and romantic, slow- to medium- tempo boleros and other Latin-style ballads. All instrumental -- piano, guitar, violin, etc. Gorgeous solo guitar and voice, if you don't mind it's in Portuguese: "Gil...

I've listened to a little Merzbow and liked it a lot. My favorite so far is 1930, which I found on Last.fm. I'm looking for a good album that I can get with my Emusic acount. What are some other standout Merzbow albums? Any love for Oval (Markus Popp)? I've really been digging the album...

Help me discover creative electronic music

So, I consider myself pretty close to a musical omnivore -- I'm picky in what I like, but I also listen to a wide range of genres, from baroque to jazz funk, 20th century classical, Dixieland, folk & bluegrass, salsa, you get the idea. But I've been kind of resistant to devoting much time to...

    Recommend me some phenomenal vocals

I recently picked up Kurt Elling's latest CD, Nightmoves, and am now a convert. Not only does he have an amazing sound, but he's actually a hip and innovative jazz vocalist (rare enough!) without being a show off. Here are some good songs, though they don't compare to the CD, which is...
