    Korg MR-2: how many owners?

I'm waiting for a Korg MR-2 to arrive today. I may not even open it as I hadn't checked for a line output. How could they provide mic in and line in but no line out!? Is anyone aware of a mod to kill the headphone amp and convert to a line out? I probably should have gone with new Tascam and...

It's hard to believe that no one on HeadFi has heard this amp. . .

Difference Between a MacBook Pro and a Tube Amp?

First there are two gaps between any computer's headphone jack and that of any decent USB amp. First, you've got a less than mediocre D/A converter. Then that not-great signal is fed to a 10 cent opamp headphone amp. Result: Undistinguished muck. I think, but can't swear to it since it's been a...

Where to Hear/Buy the Yamamoto HA-02?

Now that Venus Hi-Fi has folded its tent, where in the U.S. would one purchase the Yamamoto HA-02 headphone amp?

    The Melos Modification Thread

Hi Guys, I have a SHA-1 that's been in a coma for several years and I'd like to get it back up on its feet for a few different purposes, mostly revolving around a recently acquired Otari MX-5050 reel-to-reel deck. I spend my days working on my computer while my step-son, who works nights...

    New USB DAC

I heard the Cosecant at CES '04 and it sounded very nice indeed. The casework is gorgeous. I'm ordering The Brick blind - or should that be deaf? - to use to feed a (TBD) headphone amp in on-site recording situations off my Powerbook. For on-site recording, the Cosecant industrial art chassis...

A few thoughts on AKG K-1000's

Wallijonn, There's room for any number of flavors in the marketplace, and in peoples' hi-fi. I wasn't suggesting otherwise. I will say that, IMHO, once one hears an SET amp with K-1000's, even going back to push-pull tube amps, much less solid-state, is difficult. YMMV, as always.

A few thoughts on AKG K-1000's

As Hirsch said, many, many deficiencies laid at the feet, (ears?) of these phones, and many fine speakers for that matter, are actually the fault of less than great source and amplification gear. Then, too, people are getting used to the absurd levels of bass suitable for dinosaur footfalls...

A few thoughts on AKG K-1000's

Hunh! Good point. Conventional usage seems to favor using the term for the semi-conductor side of the aisle. Who knows why? On the turning the drivers thing: Yikes! I've only ever heard that advice on Lowther drivers where owners are advised to rotate them periodically. Weird, but easy to...

Don, Nope. I haven't subjected my ears to sand amps in a few years now. Ummm . . . you're kidding about the sub, right?

A few thoughts on AKG K-1000's

Hmmm . . . no idea. I'll look around. I don't despise them now that they don't get in the way of my ears, but I won't be using them, either!

A few thoughts on AKG K-1000's

Haven't been around for a while, but Shivohum sent me an email which got me to look in, and having done so, it's hard to resist jumping in again. . . Audio Note/ AKG system Just a couple thoughts on using the K-1000's to start. I see much discussion on what cables and amps to use with...

    ive minutes of fame

Rick, I'm in the Hartford area. Would you care to swing by with the box sometime and try it with my pair of AKG K-1000's? I currently use them straight out of my Bottlehead Paramours, fed by either an Pioneer PD65/Audio Note DAC 1.1x combo or a Linn LP12/Rega/Denon 103D/EAR 834P combo...

thinking about building a tube amp

Check out the Bottlehead forum in audioasylum. Not specifically headphone oriented, but the Paramour kit is easy as pie to build, sounds insanely good, and makes music with the AKG K-1000 like nothing I've ever heard in 25+ years of listening, owning and selling audio gear. The...

    table radios

I've been enjoying the Tivoli 1 for about a year now. Cobalt and cherry. Great look, great sound. The tuner is absurdly good for a table radio. The touch on the tuning dial is great as well. All in all, I guess it's ok . . . . Just kidding! And for $99 it's absurdly good. Ol' Henry knows what...

    Another 2 cents, 1 tweak and a big-a** retraction

There are a heck of a lot of tubes in this chain. A pair of 6DJ8's in the DAC, a 6SN7 in the preamp and 2 12AT7's and 2 MORE 6SN7's in the ZOTL. This combo does not sound remotely tubey. It sounds like flipping music! Someone used to listening to an all solid state chain would find it...

    Another 2 cents, 1 tweak and a big-a** retraction

Mea culpa. Mea maxima culpa. I screwed up. I was driving the ZOTL out of the tape out of my Audio Note M-2, because I didn't want the signal going through two volume pots. This sounded great on the Senn 600s, but seriously anemic on the AKG K-1000s. This morning I thought, "What if the DAC...

    2 Cents on ZOTL & AKG K1000

I hardly ever do my listening on stage. I know the AKG's and the Paramour are extraordinary together. Now I get to compare them to the ZOTL/Senn combo, which was my previous standard for phones. If it goes the way I think it will, I may have to build another pair of Paramours for...

    2 Cents on ZOTL & AKG K1000

Just 2 cents worth to put one combination to rest: The ZOTL doesn't have enough juice to drive the AKG K-1000's. You can hear it; it's really clean and pretty, but it can only do justice to a binaural recording of a kazoo solo made with the mike about 15 feet away. The Senn 600's and the...

    Harvey "Gizmo" Rosenberg

Gizmo was THE leading audio gadfly, poke-in-the-eye-with-a-sharp-stick- to-the-audio establishment for at least twenty years. He was the major proponent of Futterman OTL amps which probably weighed as much as my Beetle for 2 channels worth, including massive power supply chassis. He also ran a...

    How tubey is tubey?

You tell 'im, Acid! Actually, one can never have too much tube gear, or too many tubes, but it is possible to get too tubey. My current reference for headphone listening is: Pioneer PD-65 (transport - no tubes), Audio Note DAC 1.1x (6922's), Audio Note M-2 Line Stage (6SN7, tube rectifier...

    Amp experience with AKG K-1000

Last night I started with the AES SE-1 Signature with the adaptor/extension cable using Valve Art 300Bs. Nice, but not much bass extension. Kinda dry. Swapped the 300B's for Valve Art 2A3's. Much better bass extension, as is usually the case. If you haven't heard a 2A3 amp, you owe it to...

    Thinking of Tubes Again

I'd like to add my vote for the ZOTL. I've justed voted with my checkbook, in fact, buying a ZOTL for the second time, with the much vaunted Cary 300sei inbetween. With Senn 600's and appropriate NOS (or used) tubes, the ZOTL is the perfect balance between clean sound with no background noise...

    Amp experience with AKG K-1000

DanG - I was using the Valve Art Nickel Plate 300Bs from Angela.com, and they are quite good. Kevin Deal opined that they don't quite have the magic of the WE's, but agreedthey're quite good. At a hundred and change per PAIR that was fine for me. it wasn't the individual tube that was...
