Hmm...thats strange..I was getting problems with the new v8 firmware, v4 had worked fine for me AFAIK. Version 5.02 is safe to upgrade to though. Although you might as well download the latest drivers/firmware (only because you're having problems with this firmware) and try the v8 firmware.

Please no more graphical tests of lossy audio files. An ABX test is required to tell you if it is missing any audible information in bass/mids/highs compared to the original file.

The 0202 clocks its DAC to the that of the source music, especially if used in ASIO mode. Regarding the best sample rate, I prefer to keep my files at their original sample rate but there are many who feel a higher sample rate offers more "analogue" sound. Let your ears decide.

The zune is hissless on my EP630 which I believe are 16ohms and quite sensitive. Havent tried and amp with it but it cant be too bad since the output is clean.

I dont have the 0404 but from the manual/images I think you will have to press the Direct monitoring button to get to S/PDIF input and then select the appropriate input (coaxial/optical) using the S/PDIF button below it.

I have the same symptom in my left ear. Just a high pitch (low intensity) whine that goes away as soon as I relieve the pressure on the ear canal. Strange.
