    Sennheiser HD 700 Impressions Thread

Received my HD700's from the recent Massdrop yesterday.  First impressions are a mixed bag, although I only listened to them through my E18k as a dac/amp from my laptop.  A few movies and some classical and jazz CD rips.  Other headphones I have are AKG K401, Shure SE 535, and Beyer DT770 80...

Apogee Groove Dac / Headphone Amp

Very well explained thank you!  I totally get it, and agree with your approach.  Thank you for the insight!

Apogee Groove Dac / Headphone Amp

My experience is, soundstage can vary noticeably from one dac to another, and one amp to another.  I notice this most with iem's, SE 535 in my case, and notice it much less if at all, with open back full size headphones.

    Sennheiser HD 700 Impressions Thread

I got in on the most recent HD700 Massdrop as well.  So excited, it will be my first high end audiophile headphone!  I have SE 535's that I use for stage monitors, but they feel like tools to me (which they are pretty much) and lack that luxury I associate with the audio hi-fi.  My old iBasso D1...

    Beats Solo HD

Personally I think they do have their merits, just none of them are of any interest to the audiophile hobby.  They're tough, they look good (subjective of course, but they are accepted pop culture fashion fwiw), and they do give you thundering bass, nevermind the quality or lack thereof.  All of...

    Vintage pcdp ?

You might already know this but just in case... there's a flip switch inside the battery compartment to let you use standard AA batteries. So you can still go portable while you're waiting for your BP2EX to arrive in the mail.

    Post your portable player journey!

Fun thread! Early 80's - Grade School-Fi: JCPenny's cassette recorder, the big rectangular ones with the built-in speaker & mic, and slide-out handle. Recorded my records and radio songs by setting it next to speakers of whatever was playing and hit record. Mid 80's - Middle & High School...

    Sony D171

Great reviews, thanks! I got my first headphone amp, an iBasso D1 a while ago so I should try running the D-303's lineout to that and really hear what it has to offer. Before that I tried running the lineout into my presonus firebox and out to my roland monitors and yeah, it sounded pretty...

    Sony D171

Cool, glad to see another guy putzing around with these as it seems we missed the boat. The big head-fi rush on vintage PCDP's seems to have been 5 or 6 years ago... Of the models you have that I also have or have had at one time, the D-35 is my all time favorite followed closely by the...

    Sony D171

I've read quite a few opinions of the 171 as underapreciated, and a few negative ones like yours. My favorite sleeper is the D-11. Super clean, powerful sound and goes for next to nothing on fleabay.

Questions on iPod mini and iPod 4G Grayscale

There's a lot of info in this thread about installing a CF card in a Mini. I haven't heard of anyone replacing the HDD in a 4G with a flash card but I've heard of people doing it to iRiver players so there's hope. iPod battery sellers should be everywhere. For stuff like that I tend to just...

    Sony HI-MD MZ-RH1!!!!!!!

^^^--- x2 what Milk&Coffee said. Great sound, both headphone and line-out. Excellent recorder/uploader. Decent player if you don't mind using the remote. Very basic and limited player if you don't use the remote. Minidisc media + ATRAC codecs + Sonic Stage software = fairly large supporting...

    My ears suck

You know, I often feel my ears suck too but I also wonder if it's because I haven't heard a REALLY good rig yet. I mean, I love minidisc too but I don't think it qualifies. I think this is why meets/get togethers are a must for this hobby as you get to try out a ton of gear that you (and I)...

    Yuin PK1-PK2 impressions thread

I've been rocking PK1's out of an iBasso D1 and also straight out of the hp jack of an iRiver H120 and various Sony Minidisc players. I can't believe my ears they sound so unbelievably good. They are also so incredibly comfy. In my relatively young head-fi life, these are the best purchase I...

    Sony MZ-RH1 still worth buying?

I dislike the RH1 for a DAP. It sounds great but the control layout stinks, and the sweet OLED display does not display track titles or group names (allows for a simple folder-type structure on your disc) or even the disc name. I really hate that. I heartily agree with the poster who said the...

    PSP

Meh, it will work in a pinch but it will not satisfy you in the long run as a DAP. It's a great movie and game machine, but not a good music player. As others have stated the lack of DAP functionality is the real killer, I could tolerate the sound for undemanding stuff like commercial rock and...
