  Hi, thanks for replying - the sound I'm referring to isn't really a "whining" per se, it's a very high frequency sound - I'm trying to think of phrasing that really captures it - it is so high that it couldn't possibly have a timbre.  It's as if there is someone with a dog whistle in my ear...

Through advice, I've gone with overspending my budget and getting a Lyr and things are more interesting.   There's no doubt it sounds better - and at the very least, I'm now experiencing the purported brightness of the hd800.  I definitely was not getting that until now.

It's possible I need a more musical headphone, but I'm comparing it to studio monitors which aren't exactly known for their musicality as it is and I love what I'm getting from my monitors.
