Thanks for sharing Dan! It blew me away how much you got out those fostex drivers. I'm glad you've decided to revisit planar magnetic technology. So a different technology is used on your alpha dogs?- drummerben04

MrSpeakers Alpha PRIME: Impressions and Discussion Thread
This question might of already been brought up but too lazy to look through 66 pages. Can anyone recommend a portable amp that would bring out the Prime's full potential. Now the Alpha Primes are in no mean a portable headphone so to speak but I don't care at all. As long as they don't fall off...- drummerben04

$1000 budget, should I go open or closed?
I was wondering that question too. If the loss of imaging between a closed and opened is a huge difference. To answer that question now that I think about it, closed headphones have come a long way over the past decade. I'm more concerned about the sound quality than the build quality. Of coarse...- drummerben04

$1000 budget, should I go open or closed?
Thanks for replying Boffy! Wow, people can really hear open phones. It makes much more sense now that I think about it to get a closed back headphone. A lot of my music enjoyment is on the go, traveling. Ratio makes a good point that it's a lot better to hear the music than the 12 liter diesel...- drummerben04

$1000 budget, should I go open or closed?
Oh, haha, meant the LCD-2. My preferred sound signature is slightly warm, slightly recessed bass. I do not like the HD800's. From what I heard their colder headphones. A little to accurate for my cup of tea. One headphone that I've heard a lot of hype about though is the Alpha Prime's...- drummerben04

$1000 budget, should I go open or closed?
*****POLL MISTAKE: MEANT LCD-2 NOT LCD-3!!***** I have a $1000 and my choices at this point are huge. Basically I have 6 headphones that I'm considering buying. The Mr. Speakers Alpha Prime, Beyerdynamic T5p, Beyerdynamic T1, Hifiman HE-560, Fostex TH-900, Audeze lcd-2. I would prefer open...- drummerben04

Haha, that's what he's doing duh! You think the Alpha Prime is a lot better than the Alpha Dog. Is it a right away notice the difference or subtle? From what I'm hearing people didn't think it could get any better and it just did.- drummerben04

Thanks Matt! haha, I think I'm going to spend an extra $400 :) It'd be interesting to do a comparison of some of the other high end headphones. What I'm looking for is the most opened sounded closed headphones. I think the alpha primes are definitely on top of the list. Another ones the...- drummerben04

Modding crappy headphones vs. buying a good set of headphones
Well basically was thinking of taking the drivers out of the fostex t50rp and designing new cups and ear pads for them. I know it's already been done with the Mr. speakers alpha and mad dogs, and also on this forum with smeggy's mods. I was considering making the new cups out of maple. One of...- drummerben04

Best material to house drivers for headphones, Most Open Sound?
Awesome link, so it's not just wood. If you choose wood it comes down to what type of wood to get which is well explained in that thread. Also one note to mention is wood does have a tendency to crack over time I've seen. What I've learned is finish affects the sound quality too. Raw wood sounds...- drummerben04

Best material to house drivers for headphones, Most Open Sound?
Okay, their are plenty materials to go with also a lot of people mixing materials, for instance cement and wood, plastic, metal, even 3D printing now with Mr. Speakers. My question would be, what materials brings the most open sound well keeping a closed headphone design. Mr. speakers 3D printed...- drummerben04

Modding crappy headphones vs. buying a good set of headphones
I have never modded a pair of headphones before. Can you honestly make let say a set of $50 headphones sound like a pair of $500. How would you recommend approaching this. Building completely from scratch or modding an existing build. For the modders out their do you find you save a ton of money...- drummerben04

MrSpeakers Alpha Dog Review (and comparison with HD600 and K701)
The soundstage is still quite impressive for a closed set of headphones. Most open aired sounding closed headphones I've had the pleasure of listening to. it really is amazing! It's all in the 3-D printing ;)- drummerben04

Best Headphones one can buy for $300 to listen to high resolution music files
Yes definitely ear pads affect the sound a lot. A lot of people are switching the earpads out on more basic grados and replacing them with earpads from higher end grados. People have noticed significant improvement after switching. I remember John Grado saying that each earpad is designed for a...- drummerben04
