Hi BaronJack, i haven't tried the digital toslink, but maybe the upsampling is enabled? Only few external DACs can read upsampled signals and i guess this is not the case with your receiver. i think upsampling doesn't work with DVD so this would explain why you have no problems playing DVDs...
