I was more surprised at how the membrane feels. It felt like aluminum foil, and the pink surround is papery. Also very easy to poke a hole in the aluminum. But yes, I guess it was interesting experience to see that hidden secret sauce of the Germans.

Just thought i'd throw in the pic of the membrane (dt480). That pink outer layer is glued and the dome is inverted. Really strange stuff. I believe the membrane is same in dt48.

Its very important to know that restoring a hd250 Linear I/II is not an easy path. It's a very unique headphone. Also, being so old and made in the late 80s/early 90s? ... the manufacturing process did not result in such tight tolerances like today with their new modern manufacturing procedures...

I would imagine due to the plastic housing and possible gluing vs the all metal and screws. doesn't look like there is any glue. i had a dt880 250 for like 4 years as a daily driver, but it just slowly started to wear down... maybe the adhesives which caused buzzing and death in the end

That sucks dude. Beyerdynamic's QC seems to have gone into the shyter. Maybe perhaps not so much on the Tesla line as the drivers are built much more robustly with the all all metal. Some of their pleather pads just fall apart.... shame shame .... That is why I am more in the Sennheiser camp...

There was a shift from the HD540/560/250 / early 580 sound to the newer 6 series which had more emphasis on vocal forwardness and mid bass hump, then nowadays they have infused with more sub-bass presence. The tighter tolerances do result in much better fit and finish, and possibly less odd...

Have you considered the "Fostex donut technology" ? The way they have that foam ring to channel the bass which sits on top of the driver. Its one of those hit and miss, and difficult getting the right "donut" with optimal density /diameter etc. Also, do you have any photos of the enclosure...
