Leaving headphones plugged in, turn my mixer on and off?

Am I putting my headphones at risk if I leave my headphones plugged into my mixing board while turning it on and off? To be clear, when I do this there isn't a loud source signal going through the mixer and the initial no-load signal jump isn't loud, but it's still a signal rush.

    Looking for a 3.5mm jack/plug connector with a shell 8mm or less?

Hello all. I'm looking for a 3.5mm "mini" TRS jack/plug that has a 8mm or smaller diameter shell. I haven't found any. Does anyone know of a manufacturer that makes such a smallish connector? One more thing, I don't want cheap plastic Chinese crap. I'm looking for quality parts.   Thanks in...

    RCA cable specifications

I found this.   http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=2&ved=0CEMQFjAB&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.belden.com%2Fdocs%2Fupload%2Finsulations-jackets.pdf&ei=4GYXU6qDH8T72QXbzoHQAw&usg=AFQjCNE4Rtxzw88AhFkfGd6Cv5R23D8D1w&sig2=z19HG84Fplq7seXb8lyvSw   It covers the science of cable...

    RCA cable specifications

I built my first Hi-Fi. Sweet rig. Now i need to design some RCA cables, or maybe not, depends...   Like thousands of others who post on "audiophile" boards, I'm trying to demystify the engineering and marketing claims in order to come to reasonable conclusions. I'm not going to worry about...

    is it Sibilance?

This is an internet forum. We can't make sounds here, we can only use words. Those two quoted sounds above are the best sounds to describe sibilance on an internet forum. I would add sibilance sounds kind of ringy, kind of like the ring of a ring modulator. Sibilance is very subtle and only...

    Sennheiser Momentum impressions thread

This is correct... The HD 25 series were designed for broadcasting and monitoring. Excellent for DJ use. See my above post. They do isolate well. They do block out club surroundings well (very loud and obnoxious atmosphere). While at my day job I often can't hear people speak to me with them...

    Sennheiser Momentum impressions thread

Yea, clearly, the marketing backing this product is aimed at young yuppies. These seem to be fashion accessories as much as listening tools. That's cool, as long as they sound good. Personally, I'm a listening tool guy.   I've been a working semi-professional DJ for 15 years. My HD 25-1 are...

    Sennheiser Momentum impressions thread

I bought a pair of on-ears last week. Up until this purchase I've been listening to my music on a pair of HD 25-1 (85% of my listening time) and HD 600 (15% of my listening time) exclusively. I've owned both for about 8 years, a long time. I produce music as well. I've been using AKG K271 in my...

Sennheiser's Own Balanced Cables for HD 600/650, HD 700, and HD 800 Available This Week

Head-Fi and many of it's members excel at confusing people. This place hurts people's understanding of engineering as much as it helps.   I'm convinced it has to do with the sounding of the two words "balanced" and "unbalanced". "Balanced" sounds good, less bad, and less risky. Humans don't...

Sennheiser's Own Balanced Cables for HD 600/650, HD 700, and HD 800 Available This Week

You don't need balanced cable for a 10' length of cable.   Balanced cable starting at $240? That's ridiculous. Ridiculous? Actually it's insulting. With pricing like that, Sennheiser must think consumers are dumb.

Thanks for all the info. Stuff I need to know.

special drivers for USB DACs - what's the point?

That's what I thought. Until I saw this:   http://schiit.com/products/modi     "USB Powered, No Drivers Modi plugs into virtually any computer—Windows, Mac, and some of the most popular Linux distros, as well as iPhones and iPads—and requires no drivers"

That's interesting. Thanks for posting that.

special drivers for USB DACs - what's the point?

What follows is an opinion, for reasoning's sake, not a fact...   The only reason I can think of is device features or compatibility with DAW software or mixing software (desirable for signal routing and mixing if a user wants to go in that direction). It is a case of hardware software...

SPDIF input to PC under $125

I believe you're correct. Actually, I e-mailed M-Audio today to confirm because I'm working on a build and I'm considering that card for several reasons, input being one of them. My biggest concern is future driver support and PCI becoming legacy technology. Anyway... FWIW, I've used a Delta...

SPDIF input to PC under $125

M-Audio Delta series. Several I/O configurations to choose from. Off hand I believe 3 will meet your budget. This one probably fits your needs the most:   http://maudio.com/products/en_us/Audiophile192.html

    sound cards these days?

Thanks Tablix. The vocabulary has changed a bit over the past 10 years.   I've found a lot of what I'm looking for. Other insight is welcome!

    sound cards these days?

This is a possibility. However it would limit a user to unbalanced cables feeding the powered speakers... In other words it would limit the cable's length to approximately 20ft. I have to take some measurements.   Thanks for the heads up.

    sound cards these days?

This is what I mean. What's the difference between an "audio interface" and a "DAC". To the best of knowledge they are the same thing. Something that converts a digital signal into an analog signal. I don't need inputs, for instance to feed the signal of an analog synth into a DAW. However, this...

    sound cards these days?

This is all I want to do:   Run a low noise signal from my new PC to powered speakers, for instance KRK or JBL. It's for music playback purposes, that's it. This is the dilemma... PCI cards seem to be going away as the, what I would call the reliable-rugged-low noise standard. Maybe that's...

Best headphone amp to walk around with?

One design aspect that I like about the Leckerton UHA-4 is it's rounded encasing. It doesn't catch on pants seams. However, your headphone jack probably will. It also has digital volume control so a user doesn’t have to worry about lint eventually getting into an analog pot. Lastly it’s lite...

    Does anyone use mog?

I've been using MOG for about a year and a half. I use it often. I'm pleased with the service. I had to cut my music consumption budget, I had no choice but to move to a cloud service. I've saved thousands of dollars because of this service.

Pretend I never heard rock/metal before and recommend me the best of the best in those genres

This is one of the best acid rock records I've heard. The musicianship is phenomenal: Voice of the Seven Thunders - "Voice of the Seven Thunders" This record tends to be universally recognized as one of the best modern psych albums: Black Angels - "Directions to See a Ghost"
