    New Millett Hybrid Maxed Amp

Another Millett Max (build 2) lives! I'm not much of an audiophile (built for cost of mats for a friend + soldering experience), but it does sound good. One problem though... I got both the 12FK6 and the 12AE6 from beezar.com. The 12AE6's all work fine, one of the 12FK6's hums. The humming...

    New Millett Hybrid Maxed Amp

So I just started populating my board with the resistors/diodes and noticed something... RR1 and RR2 are supposed to be 1/4 and 1/2 Watt resistors respectively, but the linked part is 1/8 and 1/4 Watt respectively. Are the 1/8, 1/4 watt ones acceptable or do we need the 1/4 and 1/2 Watt ones?

    New Millett Hybrid Maxed Amp

So... I'm planning on ordering parts to build a Millet Max today (pending parts approval of my co-projectee). Ordering seems more or less straight forwards off the BOM until QB9 L/R and QB8 L/R. In the BOM there's two NPN/PNP transistor options given, but both are calculated into the final...

CMOY questions + Check out my Highschool Cmoy Business Plans!

Don't buy the generic ratshack iron. Sucks big time. If anything I use my EE lab's Weller WLC100 which works really well. Might consider getting one myself to replace my ratshack one. And practice soldering your interconnects with really cheap hook up wire/stranded/leftover wire first. My...

The Apple diyMod: My Take on the Famous iMod [56k killer] Featuring 3G, 4G, 5G and nano 1G!

Bought the dock from Steven Kelby so I can't check the caps. ... Interesting thing is that the output from the amp is actually reading only 12 mV... Might just be discharging issue? Edit: Think it was discharging (was playing music to test if channels were correct). Seems like one is...

The Apple diyMod: My Take on the Famous iMod [56k killer] Featuring 3G, 4G, 5G and nano 1G!

So, after finally having the time to attempt to trouble shoot the my Mini... I find that there is STILL a DC offset no matter what I do. From the LOD its 30 mV and after my amp (yes, I know running DC through my amp is BAD), its ~ 15 mV I'm pretty sure I'm doing this right (I get one...

The Apple diyMod: My Take on the Famous iMod [56k killer] Featuring 3G, 4G, 5G and nano 1G!

So I just did the DIYMod (caps are damn small...), and I haven't broken anything, but I do have a problem Apparently there is a DC offset of ~ 50 mV between each channel. One channel is offset by ~1 mV (probably ok), but my other channel is offset ~70 mV. Any ideas what could be the problem...

30 AWG it is. I figured 24 AWG was a bit much so just wanted to make sure. Thanks!

What gauge wires are people using for the hookup in the Ipods (specifically the Mini). I don't have much access to wire and don't really want to use generic EE project hook-up wire, so I was considering buying some. The first page recommends the e-bay shop or Digikey/Mouser, but one is 24 AWG...

    Sennheiser HD-25

Change it not just for the sound (there is a slight difference, but nothing dramatic), but for the microphonics. The microphonics on the steel cable is pretty ridiculous... you brush against ANYTHING and you will here it.

What are the best portable closed headphones in the market

And some people have said the opposite... *shrug* To clarify, the advantages that the HD25-1 has over the ES7 is NOT its sound. Its pretty much well determined that the ES7 has a "funner" (ie, sq slightly altered) sound while the HD25 has a more "analytical" sound (ie, less alteration in SQ)...

What are the best portable closed headphones in the market

Senn HD25-1 is THE top portable closed headphone. AT-ES7 is close if not equal: Senns supposedly more "analytical," ES7's more "fun." (I only have the HD25-1). But you can wear the HD 25's around neck very comfortably, ES7, not so much (based on a few reviews).

Talking to stubborn parents about choosing colleges

Its not a matter of natural/not natural but rather a matter of time. I'm pretty sure you would agree that starting problem sets the night before is a bad idea. Lab is more of an example that overnight labs will happen regardless where you go. And those stats only count universities, not all...

Talking to stubborn parents about choosing colleges

If you're gunna be an engineer, be prepared to work your ass off REGARDLESS of where you go. I go to Harvey Mudd, have friends who go to Cal, Cal Tech, UCLA, UCSD who are engineers/hard science majors, and let me tell you, we're all crying. Some more than others (me/Techer), but don't be...

Recabling= HD580 stock cables. You can shove the wire into the headphone band channel and retain the 1 sided cord Shorten the cables, stick on a connector, you're good. Check out the links in Lisa's sig.

Recommendations for Closed Portable Headphones <$150

Bleargh. Soundstage? Closed? HD 25-1?! I'll say this. To my ears, there's pretty much NO soundstage with the HD 25's. The only other high end reference I have access to is DT 770's or 880's (forgot, but the open ones) and those belong to a friend. Compared to those, yeah... I don't think I can...

Yet another newbie: Durable portable cans

HD 25-1 Expensive, but has good sound quality (at least I think so) and every single part except for the drivers can be disassmbled/re-bought at Sennheiser's website.

Recommendations for Closed Portable Headphones <$150

If you do get the Senns HD 25-1s, you're going to want to switch out the cables with OFC senn cables (HD 580, 600, 650). Its perhaps one of the more important "mods" you can do with the HD 25. The steel cable it comes with is ridiculously microphonic and the switch to copper cables changes the...

Recommendations for Closed Portable Headphones <$150

HD25-1 + a rewire to Senn OFC cables = probably the best, closed portable sound you're going to get. And these are phones you can just toss around too. Not flashy like the ES7's so you wont "flash" at night. Not sure on this as I was deciding btwn 25-1 and ES7's (got the 25's obviously), but...

The way I loosened the headband was to extend the cups one notch beyond what I wanted it to be at, stretching them over an EE textbook and let it sit for a night or two. When I came back, the extended setting was too loose, but when I readjusted to the correct setting, it was just right. The...

HD 25-1's are hard to find USED (if you're in the US, theres one up for sale right now on Ebay...) New pairs are running for ~ 200 bucks, again in the US. Doesn't seem like many people want to part with them...
