    S.O.S.--need help diagnosing/correcting noise

I have a noise in my system that is driving me nuts. It only occurs when I use my turntable, never when playing cd's. It is only in the right channel, and it sounds like "Dat-did-did-did-did," in rapid-fire. It happens every few minutes, and only lasts for 2-4 seconds. The sound is quite similar...

How to maintain VPI 16.5 record cleaning machine?

I just picked up a used VPI 16.5 RCM off e-bay and I'm enjoying the benefits of clean records. I am, however, wondering where the waste fluids are going. This unit was originally a HW-16 that was upgraded by the previous owner to a 16.5 (not sure if that matters or not). The instruction...

    Loundness War in the media

Here's an interesting piece from today's Wall Street Journal about the loudness war. People actually read this paper, so maybe there is hope? see Even Heavy-Metal Fans Complain That Today's Music Is Too Loud!!! - WSJ.com

Confessions of the "speaker dumb"--component matching?

O.k., I admit it. I don't know anything at all about speakers or component matching for that matter. My journey into quality audio has been strictly headphone oriented thus far. But, I have a new turntable coming and just ordered a new set of speakers. (Wharfedale Diamond 9.1, 75th...

    Another record cleaning thread

I know how important it is to clean your records if you get them used. Historically, I have scraped by using commercial cleaning sprays and microfiber cloths. It works o.k., but it's far from ideal. Although I'm not crazy about laying down big bucks for a record cleaning machine, the...

Denon AH-D5000 or Senn HD-650 or Grado RS-1?

I've recently upgraded my source and I'm very happy with it. I do most of my listening with GS-1000's, which work very well with the Marantz SA8001 and Grace m902. I also own a pair of AKG K-701's, and I like them too. However, I've got the urge to try a new flavor. I listen primarily to rock...

Marantz 6100 TT seems to be dying

It's been a rough month. First my Denon 2200 started getting finicky about redbood disks, and now my Marantz 6100 is having trouble spinning at the correct speed (it's slowing down). The problem is not constant, but it happens often enough that it is annoying. My vinyl collection is not huge...

Your Favorite 5.1 mixes on DVD-A or SACD?

I recently acquired the deluxe addition of "Tommy" by The Who and I'm loving it. On the flipside of the coin, I also picked up a copy of the Flaming Lips' "At War With Mystics," and "ouch." I thought the redbook version hurt my ears. This one is even worse, if that is possible. It's a shame...

    Denon 2200 is dying

Hi all, My Denon 2200 seems to be slowly dying. It still plays SACD and DVD-A reliably, but it regularly has difficulty recognizing redbook CD's for some reason. So, I'm in the market for a new player. Ideally, it would be a universal player like the Denon that I could use to play...

    My new amp: Grace M902

I just picked up a Grace Design M902 m902 reference headphone amplifier . This has replaced my HR Microstack as the engine driving my office audio system. Rather than using USB straight into the Grace, I have continued to use an M-Audio Transit to convert USB to digital (optical), resampling the...

    Proposed System overhaul

I'm thinking of upgrading my front end to get more out of my GS-1000's (w/stock cable). After a bit of research I'm leaning toward a Cambridge Audio 840c (Redbook CD player/DAC) and a Woo Audio 6 tube amp (maxed). I like the 840 because I can use it to play my redbook CD's (obviously) and can...

The mystery of MIDI--a question for musicians

This is probably the wrong forum to ask this question, but you people are my "virtual" friends, so I hope you will forgive my slightly off-topic post, and confession of complete ignorance about the issue I have. Here's the deal. My 15 year old son plays electric guitar, and I mess around with...

The "State of Your Xin" Thread

Fellow Xin-folken, A bit of time has now passed since the drama associated with the introduction of the Xin IV amps (SuperMicro; SuperMini; SuperMacro--see www.fixup.net --). If you want the full, unabridged saga of the Xin IV story, see http://www4.head-fi.org/forums/showt...&highlight=xin...

    My Return to Vinyl

Frustrated with poorly mastered CD's of classic rock albums, I finally decided to get a vinyl rig. I went the E-Bay route, and I got lucky. I picked up a vintage Marantz 6100 turntable for $170 shipped, and it looks absolutely brand new. I put a new Shure M97xE cartridge on it, and set the...

Q for Experienced Xin owners: SuperMacro Options

Can anyone explain, in English, what the difference is between a "Maxout" version of the SuperMacro IV and a standard version? I've read everything on www.Fixup.net, and I'm hopelessly confused. So much information is outdated, or simply above my head. I am considering one of these jewels as...

    Audiophile/Headphone Vocabulary:confused:

In describing the characteristics of headphones (and other audio gear), there is a language that is spoken here by more experinced people that is largely meaningless to me, which is frustrating. As an illustration, here's a quote pulled at random from a recent post from a very experienced...

    Led Zeppelin DVD

I've been on another concert DVD kick (hence the "Pulse" post earlier). Anyway, I reluctantly picked up "Led Zeppelin DVD", which is a 2 disc set, for about $20 this morning. I have been uniformly disappointed with the sound quality of all Zeppelin CD's compared to their vinyl predecessors...

Of Tip choices and E500's--changing sound without ruining it

After reading this thread last night, http://www6.head-fi.org/forums/showthread.php?t=192439 , I spent a couple of hours fooling around with different tips and the E500's. I discovered something really interesting; you can make these things sound quite different by simply changing the tips...

    Xin SuperMicro IV impressions

Most of this was previously posted in the "Waiting for Xin" thread, but since I just added a new toy to my collection, the Shure E500 IEM, I thought I'd go ahead and put it all in a separate thread. Construction: The weakness in the SuperMicro. The tiny plastic housing, about the size of a...

    Question about E500 nozzle length

Apparently, Shure has increased the length of the nozzle on the E4 series IEM's, as noted by Bob in this thread: http://www6.head-fi.org/forums/showthread.php?t=191596 There was a picture posted by somebody showing the different lengths a couple of days ago, but I can't seem to find it...

    Bit-Perfect Rips w/o EAC?

When I first came to Head-Fi, I was overwhelmed with new concepts and information, and I found EAC intimidating (while simultaneously trying to learn Foobar, Rockbox, and a few other such things). Thererore, I looked for alternatives and found Easy CD-DA Extractor Professional, available from...

    Xin SuperMicro IV appearance update

The lid on my SuperMicro III cracked awhile back, and I ordered a replacement case from Xin. He sent me a SuperMicro IV case. The case is the same size, and has the same ports. However, the lid is more snug than on the version III, and it comes with a little elastic band to help hold it in...

Need advice on cable (RCA x2>mini)

I have a Denon 2200 that I use to play SACD's. Since digital out won't work, I must use an analogue RCA x2 >mini to connect the Denon to my MicroAmp. Right now, I am using a Monster Cable that is actually intended to connect an I-Pod (miniplug-out) to a home stereo (RCA x2-in). In my...

I just "rediscovered" the Boomtown Rats

The Rats were one of those bands that were played a bit on college radio in the U.S., but were very popular in the U.K. Anyway, I picked up a copy of "The Fine Art of Surfacing" the other day, and it's a good CD. It sounds much better on my new gear than on the "crap-fi" setup I had back in...

If you have a DAP with digital out to external Dac

I have a Rockboxed H140 that I use with a MicroDac and MicroAmp. Rockbox has a number of DSP options. These are clearly useful if one is listening straight out of the headphone jack, but if using an external DAC, do any of you find any DSP settings helpful in improving sound quality? Just cuious.
