  When the AK is scanning the card, there should be two little icons in the upper left corner.  One for the mounted card and another for the scan process.  You can  use the drop down menu to see what processes are running.  Just slide your finger down from the top of the screen to drag it down.

  If you don't need EQ or gain, you can use the line out.  That is what I do.

I had the same problem, but seemed to have resolved it by using the the "Settings reset" option in the "Default Settings" menu. This option deletes your settings but keeps your music intact. After reboot, it automatically did a new media scan and found my card and the music on it. No problems...

  One of the LOGICAL consequences of a short cable is more tension.   This translates into more stress on the cable from just ordinary movements.  That is one of the reasons other companies don't make cables that short.
