I have this exact combo! (E17 > Asgard 2) Yes you can bypass the E17 amp, you just have to get the line out adapter from Fiio ($10 or so on Amazon.com) which plugs into the E17 and gives you a true line out. Works great for me!

Looks like the cable hasn't changed much at all. It hasn't been an issue yet with my Bassos, but I definitely baby them because of the cable. Regardless, these look like they could be good and with Zero Audio tuning the sound we can be sure they'll punch way above their price point. I'm excited!
