The ATH-AD700 Discussion Thread
Has anyone ever tried ATH-A700 earpads on the ATH-AD700? I've got a crazy theory that it might boost the bass response and it looks to me like they'll fit. Just a thought.- ComfyGrados

HRTF and binaural measurements of Sennheiser HD650, HD700, AKG K550
Quote: Disregard everything I said. Sorry. I don't know why, but I thought you were using mics at the eardrum. I brain farted and failed at reading comprehension. Are you measuring with a blocked or open ear canal? If blocked, how are you blocking your canal? Does anybody...- ComfyGrados

AES 2012 paper: "Relationship between Perception and Measurement of Headphone Sound Quality"
I had a thought today and I was wondering what everyone thought of this: I think that a reason that the preferred target curve for most people seems to be rolled off treble, slightly more rolled off than "standard diffuse field eq curves," is a phenomenon which I've read about and have...- ComfyGrados

The PANASONIC RP-HTF600-S headphones. More fun than the HD650?
Quote: Blow on the driver really hard. See if that fixes it. If it doesn't, inspect the driver with a flashlight, see if you can find a hair on the driver. If you do, remove it.- ComfyGrados

Equalizing headphones: What equipment do I need?
Quote: I meant your target EQ curve should be flat from 0-1000 Hz since HRTF doesn't start boosting frequencies until past 1000 Hz. Of course, I suppose you could always add about 6 decibels of bass to your target curve to account for the "missing 6 decibels" if you wanted to...- ComfyGrados

Equalizing headphones: What equipment do I need?
I'm thinking that if I had the equipment, this is what I would do: - Use measurement mic to EQ speaker setup to neutral; - Place your head where the mic was while wearing in-ear microphones right next to your eardrums, measure the response of the speakers. This becomes your target EQ...- ComfyGrados

Headphone testing: To Pinna or Not to Pinna (that is the question)
Quote: I'm thinking headphone measurements using such an HRTF compensation method would be accurate relative to the flat speaker reference rather than accurate relative to peoples' sizes and shapes of heads and ears. If you have a headphone which a dummy head measures as sounding...- ComfyGrados

Headphone testing: To Pinna or Not to Pinna (that is the question)
Quote: I believe it may be possible, and very simply so, to come up with a dummy head measuring technique which will result in measurements which will be accurate for people with all sizes and shapes of heads and ears: 1. Measure a confirmed flat speaker system in an ideal...- ComfyGrados

Head-Direct / HIFIMAN Customer Service TEAM
I'm interested in possibly purchasing some HE-300s. However, I'm concerned about the part in this picture breaking: Head-fi member CanDude posted a picture here on head-fi of his HE-6s breaking at that spot / part. If I were to buy HE-300s and that part (I think it's called...- ComfyGrados

Please help me find some parts to make a notch filter
After doing quite a bit of research I found this link which has allowed me to come up with calculations I need to build a notch filter to EQ the treble out of my Grados: http://www.mh-audio.nl/parallelnotchfilter.asp The notch filter will be a very wide 5 decibel scoop centered at around...- ComfyGrados

Does lowering Windows / Foobar volume in WASAPI mode negatively impact sound quality at all?
I'm using Virtual Audio Cable with VST host right now to apply Electri-Q and Isone to movies and games. Does Virtual Audio Cable bypass the Windows K-Mixer?- ComfyGrados

Does lowering Windows / Foobar volume in WASAPI mode negatively impact sound quality at all?
Quote: This is with Windows 7? Because I've also been told Windows Vista / 7 improved the volume slider so it doesn't impact sound quality like the old XP one did. If the Windows 7 directsound slider effects sound quality, I'll definitely switch full-time to simply adjusting...- ComfyGrados

Does lowering Windows / Foobar volume in WASAPI mode negatively impact sound quality at all?
I've been told that lowering the Windows or Foobar volume while playing Foobar in WASAPI mode can impact sound quality, possibly by lowering bitrate. Is there any truth to this? Should I be leaving Windows and Foobar at 100% and adjusting volume solely with my Fiio E10's physical volume control...- ComfyGrados

The PANASONIC RP-HTF600-S headphones. More fun than the HD650?
Quote: Sounds like a problem with the plug or cable. That sound you describes sounds like a sound you can reproduce by SLIGHTLY pulling a headphone plug out of a headphone jack. In either case, simply recabling them should fix this, I believe.- ComfyGrados

Fast, bright headphones with exceptional instrument separation for ~$100?

Fast, bright headphones with exceptional instrument separation for ~$100?
Quote: Circumaural headphones create a chamber of sound inside the ear pad. Reverberations occur within this chamber. As you move the drivers away from the ears, the size of this chamber increases. The reverb back-loads (time-wise) the volume of notes, thus slowing the headphone down.- ComfyGrados

Fast, bright headphones with exceptional instrument separation for ~$100?
Quote: You'll be happy with the Grados then. Some of the above people are confusing soundstage for separation. They often, but don't always go hand in hand. This is unsurprising, as everybody seems to have a different definition of soundstage. Instrument separation is affected by...- ComfyGrados

Fast, bright headphones with exceptional instrument separation for ~$100?
Quote: The Audio Technica ATH-AD700's are everything you described except for the instrument separation, and as I already explained, you're simply not going to get exceptional separation and speed out of circumaural, open cans. Open cans by nature add soundstage and you're adding more...- ComfyGrados

Fast, bright headphones with exceptional instrument separation for ~$100?
Quote: They are semi-open. Instrument separation is about what you're going to get from any circumaural, open cans. You're not going to get Grado-like separation out of any circumaurals because circumaurals move the driver away from the ear by design which creates soundstage...- ComfyGrados
